large tiles or small tiles in bathroom

I've just had my bathroom done in 200mm x 200mm tiles white B and Q and my ensuite in Johnsons limestone 200mm x 300mm tiles with the longest edge at the top. The ensuite looks amazing I am really pleased. the white B and Q ones look ok but the tiles were not all exactly the same size. I didn't realise that the cheaper the tile the chances of them being an exact match to one another is unlikely. This has made some of the grouting lines not line up exactly.
The wider tiles definately make the ensuite bigger and having a slightly matt finish is great for cleaning. The smaller tiles were great around the window of the bathroom as I would have had loads more wastage with the larger tiles.
The Johnson tiles were a great compromise because they look larger, but not too large that it made the tilers job unbearable.
I used

I'm just about to have my bathroom revamped. I found that looking at the tiles in a showroom setting didn't give me an idea of how they would look in my smaller bathroom (8'X12').
I went by bathrooms I'd liked or hated in other peoples' homes and show houses. I thought the really big tiles (18") were overwhelming in anything less than a swimming pool sized space. In the end I decided on 6"X8" white wave tiles - they have a white on white reflecting wave pattern and should add more light. I chose some expensive small glass tiles in various shades of green to make a border.
I'll know what it actually looks like in situ after next weekif i had known then what i know now0 -
Hi Glenbat,
I'd make sure the adhesive is flexible as well as waterproof, as you're going onto plasterboard and aquapanel. They should be fairly solid but may move a little if leant on or fallen against, so the flexible adhesive would give you a bit more protection against movement.
All the best,
Feej£2 saving: 2.5 cm in the bottom of a 500ml sprite bottle - not counting but might weigh from time to time...0 -
is it a case of the more expensive the waterproof grout/adhesive, the better it is? any brands to go for/avoid like bird flu?
Not necessarily (the more expensive). Get if from a decent local builders merchant that the trade frequents - and you will be OK. Also bear in mind that, depending on your tile colour, a grout colour other than 'brilliant white' might be better. Not thinking of green / red / blue !! But something like ivory goes well with a lot of tiles. Visit a good local bathroom place where there are worked examples - 'cos when they're on your wall - too late!!I'd make sure the adhesive is flexible as well as waterproof, as you're going onto plasterboard and aquapanel. The plasterboard etc must be well supported against any movement - particularly in the shower area. Not sure I'm aware of any flexible tiling adhesive? If it does that, in the slightest, it will crack the grout. And water will penetrate, as we know, even the most minute of cracks - and the tles will fall off within days.If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
our bathroom was very small - until we put large plain beige tiles on and now it is suddenly huge !!!
we put a column of mosaics up each wall (2 width) and a few rows at the top as the large tiles would have been a nightmare to cut length-wise
we tiled ontop of tiles as u do have to have an evan wall for large tiles.
i love my new bathroom but will be moving shortly, to a house that has all mosaics in the bathroom and it looks tiny.... will be putting the same large tiles on again !!0 -
The grout in my existing bathroom gets badly stained when using hair colour.
Last time it was re -grouted it was with a waterproof grout. Is there any product that won't get stained by hair dye.?if i had known then what i know now0 -

Probably not - as even waterproof grout attracts mould etc if not regularly cleaned / dried.
Can only recommend you stop splashing! Or try something like this :

Another problem with Mosaics is that you get through so many tile spacersThe quicker you fall behind, the longer you have to catch up...0
