Hi everyone , we have been living in our house for 7 years now and I dislike my stair case so much . It has been varnished in this horrible
yellow/orange varnish and makes the hall way look depressing.
The trouble is my husband says he likes it the way it is  ,
he says if we paint it we, will regret it , when it gets chipped.
But I cant look at it any longer , so please can someone please advise me what sort of paint I should paint it with ?
I want to paint it a fresh white.

hi first you will need to get the old varnish off by sanding burning or by using a liquid paint remover after that get a cheap under coat then the choice of paint is up to you i would advise you on dulux white satin wood rather than gloss this gives a much whiter cleaner white than normal white gloss ive seen it in a few houses and just about to put it in mine
hope this helps0 -
I'd highly recommend not using a sanding burner or varnish remover. Firstly, it's way to much hassle and nonsensical.
If you want to just paint over it, use a specialised primer such as Zinsser 1-2-3 or BIN. Both these products will stick to the varnished wood without the need for sanding or devarnishing. They literally stick to everything! After that, yes, use a satin or eggshell. I'd recommend a trade satin or eggshell such as Johnstone's, Crown Trade or Dulux Trade. Any Decorating Centre will stock both the Zinsser and satin/eggshell of your choice.
However!! You could just re-stain the stair case? And I mean stain, not varnish. Varnish isn't attractive. But if you give the staircase a light sand down and use the likes of Sadolin Extra on it, you can completely transform and save the wood... an you might even like it!0 -
A light sanding to create a surface the paint will key to followed by a good clean with slightly soapy water to remove any grease/dust is all the preparation you need to do.
Then undercoat and apply whatever finish you wish. If the staircase wood is nice and crisp then my preference would be a white gloss.
Multiple coats of undercoat and gloss topcoat will reduce any chipping and keep your husband quiet :-)0 -

I'm with Danmurray on this one.:D, if you just Undercoat and gloss the chances are it will chip, but if you use either the Zinsser, or Dulux supergrip, then it wont chip or peel/flake.
It sticks to the varnish like glue, and will stop any of the stain bleeding through, then you can undercoat, and gloss, if your going for gloss, if your going for satinwood, then you might get away with 2 coats of satinwood.0
