Hi all -

Myself and my two friends are planning on climbing mount Kilimanjaro next year to raise money for a charity close to our hearts. My boyfriends 21 year old brother, and our friend, Trooper James Munday was killed in Afghanistan in October last year, he was a keen climber himself so we thought this is the best challenge to go for to raise money for the Household Cavalry Operational Casualties Fund which looks after injured soldiers and families of soldiers killed in conflict.

Just wondering if any of you have ever done a big challenge for charity and how did you fundraise? There are a few things that we have talked about doing like asking people for their old junk that we can sell at a car boot, hiring a venue to explain the challenge and do a fund raising quiz etc...

Any tips welcome, we are looking to raise as much money as possible.

Thank you all :A

Hi Laura, i reached the summit of Kilimanjaro in 2005 and raised £4,000 for charity. I held a charity race night which was a great success and raised £1000 on the night, i also ran a 'bonus ball' lottory competition where people in my office all bought a number and if their number was the bonus ball then they won £25 with the balance £24 going towards charity.

If you would like any advice on kilimanjaro, drop me a message and i will be happy to help you as much as i can.

    best wishes

How are you getting on with this, i am really looking at this for 2010 and wonder where to start with fundraising.... lots of companies say raise £3500 (ish) and flights etc are included and balance over this cost goes to your charity.

Is this how you are doing it? Just looking at what companies offer the best for the most money to charity at the end...

    Thanks for the info...

I work for a charity - and we use a number of different companies for our overseas treks/cycles. They are all pretty good and the charity never loses out on money - if a trekker has not raised 80% of target before the event then they don't go! (EXTREMELY rare!!)
I would recommend charity challenge as a good one in terms of flexibility of prices for participants - they offer 3 payment options for each challenge and their website is very good. Others we use are Discover Adventure, Across the Divide & Skyline.
If you have a charity in mind do give them a buzz, they might guide you to a particular company that they recommend.
All the best - you will have an amazing time! :T

  • Hi Danuk, have a look at my earlier reply to Laura for some ideas. It took me about 9 months to reach the total i needed, although i paid for flights & travel etc myself. In total i raised £4,000. It is hard work and you get a lot of knock backs from people & organisatiosn but it is so surprising who is willing to help, often those you least expect!
