Sofa, Chipwood paper and flooring??

Options
Hi,

I am currently decorating a "social" room - in other words where all my partners game consoles and dvds are :)

I am looking at replacing the sofa and flooring and putting a lick of paint on the walls ....but i have come across a few issues...

1. there is chip wood wall paper on and i have heard this is quite hard to get off and can sometimes take the plaster off.... if the plaster does come off would it be a case of replastering and lining paper??? Also being a worrier someone said to be careful of asbestos....is this true or a myth?

2. I am having laminate flooring down as we have a dog and think it is an easy clean but some of the stuff through the flat is slightly cheap looking is there some that can look quite good and not cheap???

3. Sofa.... I am look at getting a corner sofa...preferably brown leather due to the dog, but the one i have found is in Argos and im not sure on the quality...has anyone had any experience with their furniture???

oh pants i remember something else...with paint...because this room is where people will smoke (ew nasty habit) is there a paint that wont discolour or can easily be wiped ???

Thanks

Chants xxxx

    hi,

i am currently decorating a "social" room - in other words where all my partners game consoles and dvds are :)

    1. There is chip wood wall paper on and i have heard this is quite hard to get off and can sometimes take the plaster off.... If the plaster does come off would it be a case of replastering and lining paper??? Also being a worrier someone said to be careful of asbestos....is this true or a myth? woodchip ;) can be a bu99er to get off so, particularly in view of your comment about smoking below, i would leave it and just paint over.

    2. I am having laminate flooring down as we have a dog and think it is an easy clean but some of the stuff through the flat is slightly cheap looking is there some that can look quite good and not cheap??? a lot of laminate does look cheap, can't stand it myself, and i guess you get what you pay for.

    3. Sofa.... I am look at getting a corner sofa...preferably brown leather due to the dog, but the one i have found is in argos and im not sure on the quality...has anyone had any experience with their furniture??? the quality won't be great but given the use you're putting it to that may not matter

oh pants i remember something else...with paint...because this room is where people will smoke (ew nasty habit) is there a paint that wont discolour or can easily be wiped ???

    Thanks

hi you again i dont think yo will find asbestos in plaster its more in artex on walls and ceilings so i wodnt worry about that wood chip is a nightmare to get off so you will just have to use some elbow grease and if you do have to replaster the walls i wouldnt put lining paper up id just paint straight on to the plaster i have just done my kitchen and i went for the zebrano flooring if you go onto the wren kitchens forum there is a link on the forth page i thing of my kitchen have a look n see what you think its a bout 20 quid for 2 sq metres when there is 15% off
  • Wow you just keep following me but thanks :)

OOO i'll have a loiok, i am so picky but i want to stick to my budget.

Oh god i feel a tad clueless note to me dont put lining paper up ... i was going to hire a steamer ( like usual) will this help in get wood chip off or am i just paying more money out that isnt needed? Would the ol' sponge and warm water work just aswell ?

  • Landyandy - mmm i guess your right about lkeeping it on ...we left it on in the bedroom but i can help feeling it doesnt open up the room even with a light paint on it...
I guess thats your opinion its just works having a dog although my mum has this cool lino effect wooden floor it came in slates but its half the weight and thickness of laminate and doesnt scratch as easily...

Whree would be good to get a good value sofa without look uber cheap i guess i was looking to spend about £800 but i gues £1000 would get me something abit more classy?

its gonna be hard work however you do it i wouldnt hire a steamer id just buy one it will work out the same but then you will be able to keep it at the end to do another room
if your gonna plaster the full walls in the room dont line them if ur just gonna patch walls were its needed after taking the wood chip off u might need to line it then
  • ^^ Coool thanking you ...

last question i promise...with all the wires for surround sounds and whatever... obviously these have to go round the room and at the moment its uber messy where we shifted everything into the room, can you hide them under the flooring or is it best to do the little white trunking??

You can't hide them under laminate.

the best thing to do to make the best of it is take ur skirting boards off i no ur on a budget but its the best way then chip out about an inch or plaster from the floor up then lay ur new laminate flooring put ur wires in the gap were the plaster was then refit or buy new skirting this looks ace and finishes the floor off perfectly without silly beading
if you dont want to do it this way and use the beading you could put the wires in the expansion gap what ur ment to leave when fitting the laminate then bead over it

The problem with cheap sofas isn't how they look when new, its how long they last before they look shabby or the frame breaks.
