How does a default affect my credit rating?

First time posting here so be gentle

I entered a debt management plan (which I think is different to an IVA, right? So hope i'm in the right place) with the CCCS in late 2006. Did everything right , kept up with my payments etc. Last year with my Grandfather passed away and with the setllement of his will I was able to pay off all my debts, and still had some left over for saving. Thing was back in 2006 just before my DMP got up and running Egg sent me a default, this was litterally a week before my DMP started and once that began I heard nothing more about it.

Now that all my accounts having a nice big £0 next to them, how will the default affect my credit rating? Obviously I know the default will affect me, but will the zeros next to all accounts counteract that? I guess the accounts paid off show I can pay my debts, but the default must show I've been a bit of a muppet in the past. The reason I'm asking is because I'm looking to buy are car next month and I don't want to have to sit in the car showroom and have the embarrasment of being turned down for credit. I know this might happen anyway, but it can't hurt to be armed with as much information as possible.
