Pre-order your initial currency by booking it on line at Travelex.com - pick it up at your departure airport. No Commision and the best rates! Then Nationwide VISA debit card at practically any ATM - got Kenyan Shillings this way on the edge of the Masai Mara last year.
Survivor of debt, redundancy, endowment scams, share crashes, sky-high inflation, lousy financial advice, and multiple house price booms. Comfortably retired after learning to back my own judgement.
This is not advice - hopefully it's common sense..
  • I got caught out buying travel money from Thomas Cook with an Alliance and leicester debit card. Just found transaction on bank statement for £42, phoned bank said its not them its Visa that charge. How can they be allowed to do this??

nationwide now charge for using credit cards in most countries but not all, higher charges for the US and they are now charging for debit cards to. Only the post office and one other cant remember which dont.

The issue with the original post is that a lot of debit cards do charge, Firstdirect dont but many others do. Its a real scam as its cash transfer but the banks dont see that

That's not strictly true eslick. The Nationwide are charging for use of the cards in some countries but NOT in all. In most of Europe it's still a free service. Look at this link for information on individual countries
