Car Insurance Fraudulant Claim

Hi, wonder if anyone can help out with some advise.

I received a letter from an insurance company, addressed to me with my name and address and everything, saying that I had been involved in an accident and asked for my insurance details for their claimant. The car number plate listed as my car is not my car and I definetly have not been in any accident. I phoned the insurance company who were very unhelpful and would not give any details of the accident to me, I have also checked with the DVLA that this car is not registered in my name.

I wrote back to the 'claimants' insurance company explaining the situation (but did not give them my insurance details) and received a letter saying that they have paid out to their claimant and would be seeking the full cost of the claim from me unless i provide my car insurance details..... I'm not sure what else I can do without employing an expensive lawyer....any advice??????? I have been to the Citizens Advise Bureau who have wrote a letter to this insurance company also advising of the situation.

One other slightly interesting fact about this case is that the 'claimants' insurance company is the same company I have my home insurance with although this is not mentioned in any of their letters.

It is up to the Insurer to prove you are at fault.

Do you have any previous connection with the vehicle they are referring to.

As you have your cover with the same Insurer it could be a mistake on their part.

If you know the reg of the vehicle they are refering to you can find out who it is insured with by using this website for a small fee https://www.askmid.com The Insurers use the same database as this to find from a reg number who the vehicle is insured with. As they have written to you asking for who you are insured with I suspect there is either a mistake on their part, or the MID database is messed up (Hence why they are writing to you) or if you previously owned the vehicle it could be because you have sold the vehicle and not advised / they have not processed it the DVLA and the new owner has not insured it.

Post the registration number - someone might just recognise it.....

I had this a while back. I started to get demanding letters for a four-figure sum from two different firms, acting for a claimant I'd never heard of or had anything to do with. The tone was demanding and threatening and a phonecall to one firm was quite unpleasant, whilst the other was at least polite and immediately recognised the possibility of an error or an iffy claim.

The upshot was that I sent them all a brief but firmly worded (with a polite covering letter to the firm that was civil) denial that I had anything to do with this claim and copied that to my insurer and solicitor.

Never heard a hoot out of any of them after that. :)
