Possible Touchpad problem?

My OHs 4 to 5 year old Sony laptop, running Windows XP and OE6, appears to have developed this problem and wondered whether anyone could advise.
Earlier this week the laptop, which is used infrequently, seemed to develop the following - searches kept appearing, brightness would dim, pressing F5/F6 to adjust brightness would bring up Volume box. Various searches kept appearing although pressing other keys.
I ran AVG virus scan which found and vaulted one virus. This, however, didn't cure the problem, so last night I reinstalled the PC back to factory settings.
However, although the laptop is running much better and doing what it should, it still seems to be bringing up things like the OE Help dialogue box etc, (intermittently) when no keys have been pressed.
This is making me wonder whether there could be a hardware fault within the touchpad or mouse settings (although mouse settings should be correct, due to reinstall).
Any advice would be appreciated.
Will be back on 'net later.
Thank you

Might be worth a try disabling the touchpad and using a USB mouse for a bit. That would at least help locate the exact problem.Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.0

Thanks very much, timbar. We'll certainly give your advice a try. At present the problem seems intermittent, OH is currently using his PC and it's working fine.
We'll give your solution a try.
Thank you0
