Cheap hotels in France

We're off to the Alps for our summer holidays this year and as its a 9 hour drive from Calais to where we're staying we want to break the journey and stay a night en route in a cheap hotel. Trouble is that there is four of us (2 adults 2 kids) and the obvious choices of Formule1, Etap, Ebis etc have a max capacity of 3 people per room. Does anyone out there in money saving land know of any cheap French hotel chains that offer proper family rooms or is it possible to sneak a fourth person into a three bed room!
Thanks in advance!

Hi, we took a trip to the Alps a couple of years ago.
There were 9 of us in 2 family groups, arriving to the Formule 1 in the late evening, there was no one on reception, so we were lucky, and snuck everyone in, just shared 2 rooms. Didn't book breakfast cos that would have mad it awkward, just take a sleeping bag in a holdall and you should be fine if it is just a 'room for a night'.
Enjoy your trip.0 -
What is your budget ? Some bed and breakfasts may be within your price range and are often more pleasant to stay in. We always tend to stop off over night on longer drives and could recommend a few with great family rooms to suit 4.0

You will have no problem getting extra people in, although a sleeping bag on the floor may not suit everyone.0

Hi there,
Where would you be looking to stop off? I've done a similar search for us on our way down from Boulogne so could give you some ideas if you let me know where you're hoping to stop.

I have stayed in Novotel and Campanile on the drive through France who both have rooms for two adults and two children and you can often get good rates on their own websites.
The other two chains that I'm aware have rooms for four are BB and Suitehotel but have not personally stayed in them.
I would suggest that if you are arriving after reception has closed that there will be no problem with the extra child in the room.0 -
Thanks for all your suggestions! We're aiming to stop in the Dijon area - roughly halfway between Calais and Grenoble (which is where we're heading). Our budget is as cheap as poss! As we're looking for somewhere to just crash for the night it doesn't have to be special.
Thanks for the advice so far!0 -

That is where we stayed when we went to the Alps, though we decided to avoid the toll roads, and it took forever. Needless to say, on the way back, we did it all in one go, on the toll roads, and it was brilliant, though about 12 hours including service station stops.0
