Sounds like you just need to get the correct connector for the type of guttering, and use it to bridge the 1 inch gap between the two ends of the guttering.

Has the gap exsisted since he replaced the guttering 5 years ago, or has it always been there, ie before you replaced yours 8 years ago?

If it's always been there then I'd tell him it's nothing to do with you as your responsible stops at your boundary and you won't want to encrouch onto his boundary and set a presidence of title of land (bull poo normally baffles brains so should stop him bullying you to do work on his land/house)

If the gap was created by you replacing guttering then agree to buy the part if he fits its.

If the gap was created when he replaced guttering then tell him to get the workman back he employed to fix his problem on his house.

Does he give any reason why he thinks it's your problem, not his? On the face of it, it's his problem, particularly as his guttering was fixed more recently than yours.

On the question of putting stop ends on your guttering, I would expect that he has acquired a right to drain his water into your guttering over the years. Anyway, it's obviously not worth the hassle.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?
  • You could be held liable for any damage to his property if you repair it.
Especially as he is such a goddam assh#le.

Stand your ground and let him repair it.

That is actually a very good reason NOT to carry out the work. I'm having a surveyor friend around tomorrow to see what he thinks, from the pics he seems to think that it is not my problem. He has also offered to sort it out with the neighbours to avoid further erosion of relations.
A pity really... they are the only rotten apples in an otherwise friendly and very civil neighbourhood. :(

I couldn't find any reference to the guttering in there.
Mind you the house dates from the early 20th century... I suppose it didnt cross their minds?

I wouldn't have thought it would mention the gutters specifically, more have a reference to shared responsibilities for the 'fabric of the building' or similar phraseology.....
