Loss of broadband when using splitter

as the title suggests I get a very slow connection (16k/sec) or no connection at all when splitting the cable (virgin) to my modem and the other to the virgin box (tv).
It has run fine like this for months and months. but since i downgraded my tv package the internet has run really slow. then today it stopped altogether. I have not altered anything on the splitter.
I noticed however that the sync light on the modem was flashing. I think this is something to do with the MAC address and syncing with the virgin server.
The fix came when i took the cable out of the splitter and fed it direct into the modem.
any idea what could cause this?

the splitter will take from 3 to 6 db from the signal so removing it will boost signal , best thing to do is at top address bar type in 192.168.100.1 and then if it asks for username an password type root an root for password , go to the upstream and check the power db is between 35 to 55 db , then check downstream snr this should be above 29 , if these signal is ok then it could be faulty cable , connections or splitter0
