car insurance problem

Options
Hi Just wondering if anyone out there can help me with my dilema. I have a chance of a new job delivering and collecting prescriptions in my local area. Problem I have is that the company vehicle that is to be used for this job is'nt ready for delivery until mid July, so the company has asked if I will use my own vehicle until the van arrives. I have tried without any success to get bussiness insurance cover not only from my own insurance company, but a number of others as well, and all of them will not insure this type of cover

Can anyone point me in the right direction

Normally this is no problem - maybe your profile is making it difficult for you (maybe you are a youngster).

If your own insurer won't do it, you maybe better off seeing if a local broker can help. But this will involve some cost as you will have to cancel your current policy and this will mean charges as well as not getting any NCD out of your current policy.
  • Hi Quentin, Wish I was a youngster, but unfortunatly I'm the wrong side of fifty. I have held a full licence for over 35 years and in that time have only had an SP30 so have been quite fortunate in that respect. I drive a bog standard Astra SXI (06) and have been with my current insurer Z--ich for almost 12 years.but they said that due to delivering drugs (the prescription type) this is classed as commercial goods. I just can't get my head around why there should be such a problem

    Cheers fleedop

Do what Quentin recommends and speak to a local broker, they will normally offer you class 2 or class 3 business use with someone like Norwich Union / Aviva.

I'm sure that the company you work for could put you on temporary cover under their own insurance for a few weeks,, why dont you have a word with them. I think you would probably have to inform your own insurance company
of this but it would be the easiest for you.

    For a number of reasons.

First of all you are delivering target items. The drugs make you a "target" for criminals.

Second, delivery driving is much more risky than normal driving and regular "business use". You are usualy driving to places you are less familiar with, you will be doing a lot of stoping, starting, turning around and the like. This type of driving is more risky than just, say, heading down a duel carrigeway.

The above suggestion to have the employer cover your vehicle under their insurance could work out fine.

You should certainly have them pay all the costs of this. To be honest, why can't they just hire you something to use in the mean time? Our company always provides rental cars to drivers before a company car is delivered.
