Firewire - what do I need?

Ok - stupid question time again. I've got a crossover ethernet wire and I tried following the instructions on the link from Taffybiker but I've really no idea what I'm doing. How do I get my new computer to find the files on the old one and transfer them over?0

How do you connect to the internet? If it's through a router, then just connect both computers to that via ethernet and share a folder on one, and you should be able to see that in my network places from the other.Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.0

Ok, so you connected the two machines together using the crossover cable. Now you need to set them up as a 2 computer network.
Run the network wizard that comes with Windows and you should be most of the way there. When prompted, turn on file sharing. At this point, only Shared Folders will be available between machines.
Then open My Computer on the old machine and right click drive C. Click on Sharing and Security. On the sharing tab, it will say 'If you understand the risk but still want to share the root of the drive click here'. Click it.
You should now be able to access the entire contents of the old drive via the new machine. Copy the files over as required.Try saying "I have under-a-pound in my wallet" and listen to people react!0 -
