Problem with Barclays - overdrawn by £1.10 and charged £22

Hi All, I wonder if you could help me.

I used to bank with barclays however switched to the halifax a couple of years ago. I transferred all of my direct debits over apart from my standing order of £5 to my credit card.
The account does not have very much money in and I normally transfer £5 every month to cover the charges.
I do not have a debit card for this account as last year I went into the branch 3 times to ask for one, and still never received one, therefore I cant check my balance easily.

Now this month I totally forgot about transferring the money. So I went £1.10 overdrawn, yes £1.10

I have just received a letter from barclays saying I will be charged £22 for this, this seems highly ridiculous and I refuse to pay it without a fight, I tried calling but just got some c>w on the other end who was not very helpful at all.

Have I got a good case or is it my own stupid fault?

Thanks:mad:

  • If you go more than £1 overdrawn, you will be charged £22. None of the staff are authorised to refund this charge unless it is due to a bank error or fraud.

Ring up telephone banking and ask if you can have a Connect card - it may be the full version or the electron version.

Cancel the Personal Reserve and make sure that it is done.
If you have windows email or outlook express then set a reminder to yourself for every month a few days before the amount needs to go through to remind you.
I would claim the funds back even though Barclays will claim it is fair. I would perhaps write to their head office customer relations as the branch have declined it.
I have not worked for NatWest Bank since February 2009

I have now transferred some money into the account so that i am not in the 'personal reserve' any longer. This should cover the £22 that they have charged me and also the 1.10 that I was overdrawn.
I have called halifax and changed where my minimum payment comes from for my credit card.

I am going to write to head office requesting it back and also requesting my account to be closed. I have had nothing but bother with barclays!!!

You need to cancel the Personal reserve because it is an unofficial limit which Barclays will allow you to go into and then charge you £22 for.

But surely if I am no longer overdrawn and using their 'reserve' they wont charge me for it??

    Done. Did this yesterday, thanks.

Its now being "investigated" which basically means there gonna take 2 weeks to tell me they deem their charges fair and reasonable...

Then Ill take it further. Ive deposited funds into my account to cover the charges and Im going to cancel the account. There just absolute shiesters.

The letter states that the personal reserve is intended only for short term usage and after a few weeks someone may contact you regarding the reserve or remove it, they did neither. They have my current mobile number and I didnt get a phone call or anything. While there making money from you they dont care. Just shocking customer services

I was travelling from late april so wasnt staying at my home address so didnt see any of the mounting letters. Granted, I should have made sure these were delivered elsewhere or made other arrangements but still, these charges are not proportional to my oversight

Has anyone had any joy in getting these funds reimbursed or is it the same old story from Barclays?
