Options
Any ideas for removing very old brown varnish from indoor windows? Have tried a wire scourer and bleach. Would turps do it?

Thanks

  • Nitromors......great stuff!.....stinks though!

you can pick it up at any diy shed
if i had known then what i know now
  • If it's not a lot of varnish, just next to the frame for example I would try using a stanley knife blade to scrape it off. Worked a treat in our house following the previous owners slap dash approach to decorating!
  • Just to condense whats been written above and to avoid confusion, if the varnish is on the glass, use a stanley knife blade or proper scraper, if its the wooden frame that you want to strip, use Nitromors. DONT use a stanley knife blade on the wooden frame.

For the wood you can buy scrapers to do the job, they have a short handle and a thick blade ,theyre quite effective and less dangerous if you slip.
My dad used to use a stanley blade if it went on the glass.

    Shanni,
What are you gonna put on it afterwards?
If it will be an undercoat/gloss combination then prime with aluminium primer - it'll help prevent chipping in the future. :)
