Cross metter reading issue

Hi,

I have been renting a flat for 5 years. Recently, I have been told that I have been paying my neighbours's electricity since our meters were mislabelled. It turns out that I have to pay for significant amount of money (800 pounds). I wonder if anybody knows whether I can be charged for such a long time mistake and if I am the responsible for that. Wouldn't it be more my landlord fault?

I know that I used the electricity, however, I would have liked to monitor its cost during the last 5 years and, maybe, be more careful with it.
