Picture sizing

I am trying to amend a picture's dimenstions.

As an example say its 200 by 300 pixel I want to amend the picture to be 200 width and 400 height.

I have tried several resizer tools - but they change both width and height - I want to in affect add a border to pad the image out in height or width (which I prefer).

Can anyone recommend a tool that does this - I am on vista so no xp powertoys.

Try this online tool buddy for a quick resize:
    http://www.picresize.com/

You upload then you can change the dimensions by % or pixels.
There's a few other options too.

In a bit of a rush so I'll come back to one that can do borders etc.

Thanks but web based is not of use - I have about 50 odd and I dont want to be doing them indvidually plus they are family pics so not putting them on web.

I will give Paintshop a try - so far tried several programs none seem to be able to just add borders and resize to exact size without altering originals.

Do they not have an option to maintain aspect ratio? Which should mean they'll add borders to pad out the size.

Something like XnView ( http://www.xnview.com/ ) would do the trick, but it's probably overkill if this is all you want to do.

Stompa, the tools I have tried so far resize images which is fine but I want to standardize the size of all my photos by adding borders to the height or width (whichever is appropriate for a photo).

i.e. Maintain the width and height aspect ration but only upto the point of not exceeding my max dimension settings - if it exceeds my desired dimensions, I want the picture to be padded out with a border.

dogmaryxx - I think I downloaded and tried image resizer yesterday, didnt do what I wanted. I have also tried Mikhov Image resizer which appears might do the task but damned if I can figure out its settings (which give no easy options to configure).

You of course realise that resizing from 200x300 to 200x400 is going to stretch the image?

I worked with a chap who thought a program could add in the bits around the sides so that it wasn't stretched, the words "if its not there you can't miraculously add it by resizing" didn't really sink in.

I've just tried it using XnView (using the 'Canvas resize' option under 'Batch Processing'). Seems to work fine. If your images need to be scaled as well, then you should be able to use 'Resize' followed by 'Canvas resize' to achieve the desired result.
