Abbey applying bank charges from 6 months ago!!!

Are people aware that Abbey are applying charges this month for unpaid direct debits etc from 6 months ago. Apparantly there system failed to debit some charges in Dec/Jan Feb and are now making you pay them. I had 3 applied this month (2 for Jan, 1 for Feb) on phoning Customer Services they said they can only refund a maximum of 2 any others have to be paid.
Surely they should not be allowed to apply these charges 6 months after the event, especially as it was there fault ?
Has anyone else noticed this on there statements, as they told me they have had many calls about this, and even have a specialist team dealing with it.

Where statements? (or did you mean 'their'?)

The Banking Code requires 14 days' notice of charges being applied. Was this an advance warning of charges or are they charging without the required warning? If the latter they are potentially in breach of the code. If they are relying on warnings given months ago, I would say they are breaching the spirit if not the precise wording.

they are called shabby for a reason. Do yourself a favour, move to another bank.
  • I gotta say that I emailed Abbey a few weeks ago in part because of this issue. I got a response which is as follows:
(I don't bank with them but these questions kept appearing on MSE)
    "Thanks for your e-mail.

We have begun and will continue over the next few weeks to collect charges on some personal banking accounts which were due to debit from January 2009 onwards. The transactions that incurred these charges may have occurred from as early as November 2008.

Customers were notified as normal of any charges incurred and the date they would debit via their statement. However, these charges were not collected on the specified date but are now being collected from accounts.

Customers may call to query any debits from their account on 0845 9724 724. We are available 8am to 9pm, Monday to Saturday.

    Regards"
I have not worked for NatWest Bank since February 2009
