Saga Credit Card

Did you know that Saga is about to change banks for their Saga Credit Card because the present Bank Liverpool Victoria is withdrawing from the Credit Card Market?

The new Bank who will provide Saga with their new Card is Allied Irish Bank plc. The benefits under the new Platinum Card seem similar to the Old one.

Just had "an interesting" couple of days! Yep, Saga transferred to their new bank and we decided to set up a 100% direct debit to be taken from our Smile current account to pay the card hoping to avoid any embarrassements if we were away travelling.

We got home at the end of June and the credit card statement followed us through the front door clearly showing that the above arrangement was in place. Being of a cautious disposition, I rang Saga CC who confirmed that everything was indeed set up and I needed to do no more ie the payment would be taken on the 29th of July. Sit back, relax, and emjoy the photos.

Soooh, on the 30th of July, I check my C/A and am pleased to see the DD to Saga has been paid.

On the 31st of July, I again needed to go into the C/A and am surprised to see the detail of the payment has disappeared and the balance of the account is were it was before the DD had been taken out.

Message to Smile asking what's going on. Phone call to Saga who confirm that the DD has been paid and I could go back to pipe and slippers.

Today, 1st of August brings response from Smile that no DD had been set up or paid. Back onto the 'phone to:

Saga who advise that the payment was reversed back to Smile pm on the 31st for unknown reasons although the DD arrangement looked ok
    and
Smile who confirm that no DD has been set up and cannot explain what I saw on my screen on 30.7. They will confirm all this by letter I'm left wondering if it was just wishful thinking on my part
    and again to
Saga who, with some pushing, tell me that: this has happened to "a few" people with different banks; they will cancel the exisiting DD and set a new one; and ensure I dont get hit with any charges.

Moral? If you think you've set up a DD to pay off your Saga CC from your C/A it might be worthwhile checking that it has indeed been paid.

Now, where did I put my darned glasses? ;)

''Saga is about to change banks''??? My Saga credit card issued in 07/08 is run by Allied Irish Bank. Nothing new here.
  • The Saga Credit Card and Nationwide FlexAccount Debit Card have long been recognise as the best combination for travellers and I have used them both extensively all over the world. So when I was informed that my Saga card issuer was changing to AIB and I should apply for the new Platinum Card, it sounded a good idea. Went on line and tried to set up the card complete with Direct Debit from my Nationwide FlexAccount to collect the minimum monthly payment so that I could enjoy the 0% interest period. Wouldn't accept my bank account ADDRESS and kept rejecting whether I tried to set up the DD or not. So I contacted Saga who told me that AIB had said that it could not process payments through Nationwide FlexAccount so a card could not be issued.
So it was suggested I use another current account to link the Saga card to. Tried to do this on-line both with and without setting up the DD but again it would not accept the address of the Bank even though it is Lloyds TSB.
Back again to Saga who went through set up on the phone until we came to the address. Problem is their system wants a street name for the bank but the sort code and account number and address on cheque book shows a PO Box. Saga lass fixed this but when it came to DD set up. "Oh sorry, sir, we've been having problems with that with some banks. Your application has now gone through. When you are notified that it's been accepted you will receive a DD application. Complete that and return it to us."
labpo4's advice about checking DD set up is most appropriate. :T

I think I have found an unfortunate consequence (a.k.a. c### up) of the change.
Holders of an LV card with an end August expiry date will not have their card renewed for the month of September. No doubt that suits the card company, but it could inconvenience holders. That in my book is exceptionally bad customer service. I wonder where that emanates from LV or Saga's new owners the AA? From my experience with one of them, I know which my money is on.

    Que ?

"moneysupermarket.com comments on the likely takeover of the AA by Saga"

"the tie-up between the two household names is structured as a takeover of the AA"

OOPS, So Saga has infected itself with a terrible virus then.

TBH I am getting the impression that since AA entered the scene Saga is sagging.

If you think that, fine - you might put enough people off so that I can get a booking for next year !

PS: just come off the Saga Ruby - absolutely magnificent.

    @ monnrakerz

The holidays are good. I took the World in one country tour. However the office service and dealing with questions etc left something to be desired i comparison with bookings I have made before.Hope you get your booking :)
