Urgent Advice - Police Fine

All,
Hope you can help, I have had a problem with my insurance company, who had cancelled my insurance. This was being investigated and I asked the insurance company if I was still insured while this was being investigated, verbally over the phone they said yes. A few days later I was caught by the police for driving with no insurance, fined £200 and 6 points and seized my car to the tune of £170 plus £20 per day. A few points I urgently need an answer on:
1. The ticket (fine) was signed and dated by the police officer the 9th July 2009, although the date I was caught was 9th June 2009. How do I stand as to appeal?
2. The insurance company have said that my call was not recorded and that I was not insured, although the investigation showed that I was in the right and they are not going to persue any outstanding monies (it was a dd administration error). They cannot resurrect my insurance although they have offered me a further policy. I have lost a years no claims bonus through their error. Can I claim any further money back from the insurance company due to the situation im in plus the loss of a no claims bonus?
Any help would be great.
Thanks
