Been to La Rochelle a few times and enjoyed each visit. Ile de Re is close by and good for walking. Cheapest accommodation you will find is the Youth Hostel...... https://www.fuaj.org. A pal has stayed there and loved it.SallyD0

I suspect the scarcity is because Ile de Re is quite small. Pretty much all you can say about the place is that it is small and flat.
Why not stay in La Rochelle itself? Or anywhere to the north & south. We had a superb holiday a couple of years ago in La Tranche Sur Mer which is just between La Rochelle and Les Sables d'Olonne. We booked through Chez Nous - one of the owner-advertised holiday companies (although it may have been Bonnes Vacances come to think of it...)

La Rochelle is lovely - we never made it over to the Ile de Re as the toll was quite dear(£10ish off the top of my head) ,I don't know if you are actually staying on the island whether you can come and go as you please or if you have to pay the toll each time you cross the bridge - this may work out expensive if you plan on doing much sightseeing. Have a look on the message boards of https://www.ukcampsite.co.uk or post a question , someone is sure to have been!0

Ile d'Oléron is good and theres a large spacious campsite there, along with beautiful deserted beaches. Welll worth any toll you may have to pay.Member no.1 of the 'I'm not in a clique' group :rotfl:

I have a house near La Rochelle and can tell you that Ile de Re is gorgeous with fabulous restaurants, dedicated cycle tracks and wonderful beaches. It is where the chic Parisians go for their holidays and consequently is packed out during the summer hols. It is also expensive to get over to it - I think 15 euros toll at peak time. If you are thinking of camping then there are a number of campsites - a friend has booked a week's pitch for the summer hols after having a week with me. As far as other accommodation is concerned, I think you will be very lucky to get anywhere. Not sure about Ile d'Oleron as I have never been but I think it is a good second choice and not quite so packed.
