Help! - Claiming back when they're owed money

Hi, I wonder if anyone has the answer to this.
I'm getting the ball rolling on claiming back my bank charges from the last 6 years for my old Barclays bank account. The account still exists (balance of £1.67 I think) although I cut the card up a few years ago and have my main account with Lloyds TSB now.
The charges got so bad on the Barclays account that all my wages were being eaten up by them (I had a part-time job) and also I was struggling with other debts at the time to (more detail in the Debtfree Wannabe forum). In the end my unauthorised overdraft got so bad that Barclays demanded my debit card back and put a stop on the account until I agreed to pay the money back into the account a bit at a time which I did. Most of what I paid back being charges for not being able to pay it back quick enough.
I think my case is relatively straightforward but I also mentioned that claiming back charges was available to my mum who was also with Barclays and has ended in a similar problem.
She's on benefits and had to open a bank account when they switched over from allowing you to collect from the Post Office counter.
She's had terrible trouble with charges over the years. Now, she's certainly not the most responsible with money (where do you think I get it from lol ^_^) but in the past she has been brave enough to tell bailiffs to naff off because we had nothing of value for them to take and also to have debts go to court and be written off or the full amounts lowered because of her low income.
Anyways, to cut a long story short, in the end Barclays were taking her entire income every week on charges so she opened a basic account with the Post Office and now has her money paid into that... and then started ignoring her Barclays account.
They stopped her card and the account (and continued adding interest and possibly charges although I'm not certain of that yet) and have been nagging her to pay the massive unauthorised overdraft off for goodness knows how long. The unauthorised overdraft is mostly (if not completely) comprised of bank charges but may now have been passed to Barclays debt collection department (rather than being a bank account in arrears). I need to investigate some of this stuff in more detail, and have asked mum to dig out all her old statements to tot up how much she's been charged over the years.
In these circumstances is it worth trying to claim the charges back?
