Help Please

Hi All,

I am about to be made redundant, my job will finish end of July. I am 29 years old and live with my partner, redundancy payout will be minimal as I have only been with the company 2 years. I am currently trying to find another job however if I do not find a job by the time I get made redundant I wondered if I am entitled to any kind of benefit or help? I have worked since I was 16 and never claimed credit before, someone mentioned that I may get some tax back? I am totally clueless and was wondering if anyone could give me any advice? Many thanks!

    Hi Bx111,

I'm in a similar situation myself, just a little further along in the process than you. I have been made redundant, but am still technially employed until 4th July.

I have started the process of applying for job seekers allowance (approx £64 per week, paid every 2 weeks in arrears) and have an appointment at the job centre today to complete the paperwork. The paperwork will then get processed and I'll recieve a statement in a few weeks to say when i can start claiming and how much i will recieve.

I don't expect to be able to claim until after 4th July, but it doesn't harm to get the papework done, and you never know, i might get something earlier!

Will let you know what happens, and it might shed a bit of light on your situation.

As you've been paying NICs you'll be able to receive contributions based JSA for 26 weeks. Any other benefits, either now or later, will be means tested and based on household income and savings.

And getting tax back will happen at the end of the tax year if you haven't found work by then or, more likely, when you begin working again in the current year and your tax code will enable your new employer to pay you the refund.
