BT-Moving Home

I rang BT 2 weeks ago to inform them that i was moving home, they tested the line there and then saying i would have to pay £120 reconnection as they couldnt switch it on and an engineer would have to come to the new house to do it and i would have to be there.

We got the keys to the new house early and went over saturday and the phone was on (was def prev off) with our new number.

Got a text from BT this morning confirming that the engineer is booked for this fri between 8am and 1pm blah blah so i rang BT and i just felt like i was being fobbed off,she said oh well theyve just done it early and i said well you told me i HAD to be at the house or my appointment would be rescheduled and she couldnt answer that.

Im now confused as to what the £120 charge is for..anyone know??

    What is the charge for?
BT's terms are similar to other providers who arrange line activation:
    • If your home has had a telephone service from BT in the recent past, and the wiring and socket is undamaged and the line still has dialling tone, it's likely you won't need to pay this charge. But where there's no suitable BT line available in your property, no dialling tone on the line ........the standard connection charge will apply.
    • The connection charge covers engineering work in your exchange or your property in order to connect the line and is subject to survey.
    • I do wish you'd come here first - before agreeing to pay (BT has a free connection offer on until the end of June).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • RE: Free reconnection charge

BT have told me that I am not eligable for the free reconnection offer because I'm tied into a weekend call package until Nov 2010.

It will cost me £120 for reconnection. Or I could cancel and go with someone else. But BT will charge me £250 for the cancellation of Home Hub and Freeview box etc.

    I guess I'll pay the reconnection fee?

We are due to be moving home at the end of July. We had a look around our new place last weekend and the current tenants have a BT landline and BT broadband. Does this mean that we shouldn't have to pay a reconnection fee when we move in? Obviously I will tell BT that we are moving in plenty of time.
