How can I get dust/soot marks out of magnolia painted walls?

Ive noticed that I have dark streaks of soot/dust marks on my magnolia painted walls and white ceiling. They are very prominent and look awful!
I suspect an open window has caused it but Im really not keen on repainting as the place doesnt really need it just yet - just need to get rid of the soot!
I tried using wet wipes and a damp cloth but the soot smudges and looks worse!
Any ideas?

Hi
Try good old sugar soap. Start at the top and work down. Dont scrub too hard if it is matt paint as the adhesion is not as strong as vinyl. Vinyl was designed to be 'wipeable' and harder wearing.
If this does not work the only option I can see is to clean down, use stain block and repaint with magnolia.
Hope this helps.

Sugar soap? Im assuming I can buy it in DIY stores? Im a real novice as you can tell!ee bye gum0 -
You can buy it as a powder and mix with water or ready-mixed in a bottle. Any DIY/hardware store should stock it, as does Wilkinsons. It can be an irritant to the skin, so wear gloves and wash off any splashes."Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.0
