If you're in the Derby area, The Odeon (used to be the UCI at the Meteor Centre) has a Kids Club on Sat/Sun and throughout the school holidays. Films start at 11am, and they are usually older releases (perhaps just comming out on DVD), but hey, my girls just love the experience of going to the flicks!

The price per child is £1.95, and for every child, one accompanying adult gets in free, so our family of 4 have just been to see "Cheaper By The Dozen 2" for £3.90 in total.

I guess other cinemas in the Odeon chain do the same.

If it works, the link to the "Derby Kids Club" should be here:

http://www.uci.co.uk/index.php?page=kidsclub&tbx_site_id=32

There's a "Lidl" supermarket just up the road as well, so you can stock up on cheap "treats" before you go in! See Martin's article on Lidl,Aldi and the like here:

http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/cgi-bin/viewnews.cgi?newsid1139914268,92033,

For those with a bit more energy, Erewash Borough Council have been producing a series of circular works, which our girls love to go on (especially if the weathers good and you take a picnic).

The leaflets are available from Town Halls and Libraries in the Borough, but they've just made them available to download in PDF format on the councils website.

Should be available here:

Have fun!!

Hi everyone

I found it interesting to see people's comments about taking in their own sweets to the cinema.

At our local cinema there is a large sign saying no food and drink from outside to be consumed and a big security guard will, on occasions, ask to search bags and stop you going in if they see you with anything.

It has caused a lot of upset in our area (Eastbourne) as the prices are so expensive and we used to be at least be able to take some drinks in and buy their popcorn.

Hopefully not all cinemas will follow their example

Recipe for a peaceful afternoon!

Get yourself some coloured card, coloured paper, paper glue, and a small paper punch (they cost about £2.00 from craft shops or big stationers - flowers or stars are good shapes). It can be used for all sorts of cards, scrapbook pages, etc.

Cut an Easter egg shape from card, about A6 size. Get the kids to punch shapes from the colored paper, and stick them on the egg shape. Then get some A5 card, fold it in half and stick the egg shape to the front.

Hey presto - cheap Easter card, quiet kids, and stress free parents! Kept my kids quiet for two hours on a wet Tuesday - just remember to cover the table with newspaper to keep it clean.

Thank you. I didn't get my primary times and I do find it useful. Didn't know that it was available online. I now have some ideas as to what to do with the kids over Easter.
Mind you, I find playing cowboys and indians is good. Tie them up and go and have a cuppa!! :D

Primary Times is a magazine for parent, teachers and children. It is sent home from our school every holiday and has lots of articles and sometimes competitions. The best section, however, is "Great Days Out". Not everything is free, but in our area, there are always lots of activities at our local museums and country parks which cost very little

We spent yesterday at Beamish open-air living museum. We got there when it opened at 10am and left when it closed at 5pm and still didn't manage to see everything. We used Tesco days out tokens and took our own food, so it wasn't expensive but even if you paid in cash, I think it was one of the best attractions we've been to for value.
Adults £16, children (5-16) £10.
The staff are all in costume, happy, knowledgeable and enthusiastic. They obviously enjoy their work and their enthusiasm rubs off.
Yesterday, they were demonstrating Easter traditions 1913 style.
There is
1913
Town - including co-op, bank, Masonic lodge, sweet shop, dentists
Farm (didn't get to this)
pit village, complete with school, church and underground mine trip.
Station

1825
WaggonWay - (short) replica loco-motive ride
Manor House and gardens

You can get around by old fashioned bus or tram.

see www.beamish.org.uk for more info.
