used fiat brava - when do i get it serviced??

i just got given a 1999 fiat brava. it has 88000 miles on the clock and as far as the log book says, was last sericed at 77000 miles. when should i get it serviced next? and what should i be doing maintenance wise eg. oil etc?? this is my first car and i really dont have a clue!!

Every 12,000 miles or 12 months, depending which comes first so check the date the service was done. You should be checking the oil and coolant level every week and topping up if you have to. Also check the tyre pressures and washer bottle levels, post back if you need help.

I'd change the oil and filter straight away. Oil is very cheap (£4.50 per 5L from motor factors) and an easy DIY job. Otherwise find a reasonable back street garage to do the work.

The oil is specified as synthetic 10W40 so dont just put any old stuff in.

You can still get it very cheaply from motor factors.
(Personally I use 10W40 semi synthetic and change it more frequently.)

Make sure the timing belt is changed. I think the belt interval change on the brava is 72,000 miles.
