Wow, I'd say you've discovered something most people don't know about - and that's a rarity!!

Numerous International off-peak calls via BT and an 056 number at 5.5p for an hour - now that's gonna be hard to beat!! I can't confirm the 18866 thing yet but I'll let you know.

Keep up the good work!!! :T

Exactly the same thing happens with another Finarea company https://www.voipdiscount.com except you get a 01/02 number you can divert. If you call it from 18185 its not recognised. Finarea must block these numbers.

With https://www.voipdiscount.com their are more free/cheap destinations.

The calls are not strictly free as you have to pay a fee every 120 days. But you can use this to call chargeable numbers.

I phone several Intl Destinations through it at E&W for free without using voip . I just call forward the 020 number allocated to me to the intl target number.Dial the 02 number from my landline any hey presto i am making a Intl Call for little or no cost.

I'm able to call my 0121 VoIP Stunt, VoIP Cheap and SIP Discount numbers via 1899.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

bextech, how did you get a 0121 number on VoipCheap? They were only offering non geographical 056 numbers when I joined ~3 months ago. Have they changed now?

VoIPCheap have always offered 0121 numbers, I got mine on day 1 of them offering the numbers, they are still available today.

VoIP Cheap, VoIP Stunt, Sip Discount and all the others however only have a limited number of area codes, such as Birmingham 0121, London 020, and some other major towns or cities. If you are not in a major town or city you end up with a 0560 number, unfortunately it's not possible to know whether you are in such an area until it's too late, except if others are able to inform you, such as 0121, 020, there were several others too, but not sure what they are now.

    Thanks guys.

Blocking is what I suspected, but I can't really understand why? I'd rather give call18866 the 4p connection fee than BT the 5.5p, but I'm probably answering my own question in saying that on the 4p only basis call18866 probably aren't the slightest bit interested (understandable) as this is probably what they have to pay over to BT in any case. No profit = no point providing the service I guess.

Thanks again for your replies.

This method of forwarding is clever.
A warning though. The cost to call 056 numbers is far higher than you expect (at least as far as I understand). Check for example for costs from BT tariffs:
    http://www.downloads.bt.com/pricing/SpecialisedNos.pdf

The costs of calling 056 numbers from BT is at present (April 2006):
    Daytime 4.89p/min
    Evening 2p/min
    Weekend 1.18p/min

So you can find much cheaper prices for direct calls to Spain!
I don't call Spain much, but calls to Italy are at 3p/m on the very reliable alphatelecom, and that sounds to me much cheaper than calling the 056 number daytime.

I am not sure about the 'major town' thing. What is the criteria for determining where you are, ?

There was no address to fill when I joined (and I also looked now; there is no address on my VoipCheap account), so how would they choose where you are?

The IP only gives indication of the ISP (at best; but that also does not work too well with some). So what criteria did they use for assigning the geographical numbers? I also asked VoiPCheap if it was possible to get a geographical number but was never given an answer.

When I joined you entered your address, if you go to voipcheap website then log in, go to invoice address there you will find the address details that VoIP Cheap uses to work out what number you will receive.

You can blag, like what a lot of people do, to get an areacode from other locations.

You really ought to have a look at the MSE International Callchecker if you're paying that much to call Italy - there are 20 cheaper options listed - ranging from 0.5p to 2p/minute (at any time).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
