I've had a letter saying my meter needs changing. My house is about 25 yrs old (original meter fitted). I think they contract it out - it did say on the letter, but not got it to hand right now.

Mind you, I got this letter in January, and still not been done...!
If you will the end, you must will the means.

I received letters every few weeks telling me mine would be changed. They basically said: "We're going to change your meter sometime within the next 3 months. Please make sure you have turned off any PCs or other electrical equipment that may be affected".

3 months? Ridiculous! This went on for about 2 years until they actually got around to doing it. When it happened it was quick (30 mins) and no hassle at all, leaving me with a far smaller and easier to read digital meter.

    Hi walruspaul,

This letter sounds like a notification of a required stat change (statutory meter exchange), this is perfectly normal. :)

Electricity and gas meters are made by a range of different manufacturers; I believe each manufacturer guarantees the accuracy of their meters for differing lengths of time. I think it could 10 years or 20 years , it really does depend on the manufacturer.

The meter operator in your area will keep record of when the meter is due for a change and contact you as in this case.

If the letter is from E.ON then the meter operator in your area will be E.ON Energy Services. The meter operators change from area to area, it isn’t affected by who your supplier is.

The first letter is usually to make arrangements for the work to be carried out. If the meter is inside access will be required.

Make sure you contact Energy Services rather than E.ON your supplier, as the supplier won’t be able to make the arrangements.

Any questions give me a shout. :)

    Resistance is futile.

    Hi amersall,

As discussed in earlier posts the Meter Operators have a record of when each meter needs changing due to its age. If you contact E.ON they will be able to contact the Meter Operators on your behalf and find out when the change is due. ;)

If the meter is not due to be changed yet, and you request it to be changed anyway, you may have to pay £50 to cover the cost of the work. This is because the job is a non-essential meter exchange.
