Ok this thread is very specific and only applies to the following petrol station:

Colne Filling Station

Tel: 01923 243732| Wiggenhall Rd, Watford, Hertfordshire WD18 0FS

Now within 1 year me or my parter have had out bank cards cloned and every time it has happened we have used this station to fill up with petrol a few weeks before, last year we had out cards cloned 4 times and once we had realised the link we stopped using our card there, however they were recently taken over by BP so foolishly thought we were safe to go there again on 1st June, this was the first time in months that my wife used her card to pay, and low and behold today she gets a call from nationwide saying her card had been cloned.

Theving ****ers if you ask me. Why cant the police do something about it, they know there is a link from the previous experience we had!

Rant over!

If there's a pattern developing the police will investigate.

For various, not altogether intuitive, reasons the bank has to report the crime to the police for it to be recorded. The bank may or may not consider it worthwhile but you could lean on them.

These days I am only using cash in petrol sattions, same area.... Harrow & Watford.....

Or the ones with the "Pay at the pump" equipment......

I believe an organised gang in Sri Lanka were the last major culprits caught doing this.

Have you told the police? The bank don't tell them, you need to report it yourself.

The police actually came to me after they'd discovered that my card had been cloned from a certain shop. They seemed pretty keen to sort it.

I don't agree with this at all .... the bank will have its own fraud investigation unit ... which hopefully the OP will have spoken to already.

If the bank is paying back the money, then it is in their interest to find the culprit!!

Since being cloned at a small, independent garage (not this one), we only use CC's at garages owned by the supermarkets (working on the principle it's less likely the card will be cloned there).

We carry £30 in cash with us, and use that at any other garage we might have to go into.

We also now only use cash at Little Chef since using a card there, and ending up with it being cloned - the card hadn't been used anywhere else for 6 months prior to this.

    Lin :(
You can tell a lot about a woman by her hands..........for instance, if they are placed around your throat, she's probably slightly upset. ;)

hi all, i have been in touch with nationwide fraud (it was them that sent me a letter telling me that my card was cloned) and they have told me that they report it to the police on my behalf, they also check other peoples cards which have been used in the same places as me to see if there is a connection.

Just seems petrol stations are the main cause of these problems!!

Just for clarity, in most cases (there are obvious exceptions) the victim has to report a crime. In this case the victim is the bank - they're the one's who've lost money. So the bank has to report the crime for it to be recorded.

The OP can call the police, who will take the details, but there is no obligation on them to investigate.

That's not to say the police won't be interested in following up, but the procedure is for the bank to contact the police. If you think about it that makes some sense, the bank is in possession of much more information than the OP.

Have you approached the Local Press about this? They maybe interested in running a story.

Quote from the Police website: "In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, if you need to report card or bank account fraud, you should immediately contact your bank or card company. Credit card companies and banks are responsible for verifying the crime, and reporting it to the police."

So you are right, thanks. When I went through my problem I know policemen and other people who had the same problem and I was informed that the banks quite often do not tell the police and if you wanted to ensure it is investigated you should report it yourself. Perhaps this information is outdated 3 years later?

I didn't want to make the OP believe it was his responsibility to do so, more so that if he has the proof he can go to the police himself to discuss it.
