What can I expect in electric bills?

Hi all,

sorry if this has been posted before, I'm new to the site and still trying to find my way around.

My partner an I are looking to buy a house, we both currently live with our parents so haven't really got a clue about the average costs.

The house we're buying is an end terrace in the North East, 2 bedrooms and has overnight electric storage heating. Everything is electric, there's no gas supply to the property.

We're both out during the day and have the usual electrical equipment - tv, dvd player, pc etc, no tumble dryer or dishwasher.

The current owners are a couple with a similar lifestyle and their electric bill is approximately £80 a month. Is this average for our circumstances? Is there anything I need to be aware of when researching which energy supply company to use?

I live in the NE and I use Npower after having switched a few times in the past year. They seem OK. Your usage will depend entirely how efficiently you live, i.e. turn everything off after use, only use enough water for the cups of tea you need, etc. My leccy is £10-15 per month as a single bloke, your previous owners sound very profligate to me!

£120 a quarter here for a similar property with Storage heaters and no gas.

One suggestion re the hot water Cylinder. It's likely a twin immersion heater affair, with the bottom being hooked up to the E7 supply and heats up over night - and the top on the normal mains.

I switched em around. A full cylinder was just far too much hot water, just heating the top quarter was more than enough. Sure they are double foam insulated usually but still lose heat.

Use the washer over night on the low tarrif (depends on Tarrif, I'm lucky enough to have 3 supplies into the house.)
Use low energy bulbs everywhere etc.
You say TV - what type?! so many people miss how much these use now! The large flat screen can easily be around 180W

No, HW & CH are separate - oil-fired a communal block.
