I am really thrifty with food at the moment - my weekly budget is £60, and whatever I don't spend I save. I splurged last week and spent £25, but that was the absolute most I've spent in weeks. With that £25, I bought a packet of mince, some onions, six value tins of chopped tomatoes, and made four meals' worth of chilli and four of bolognaise. I also bought 18 free range eggs from Sainsbury's for £2.50, which will make four to five meals, and some oxtail which I used to make two batches of soup. That's fifteen meals with £25, not counting all the other bits I bought like Senseo coffee pods, sausages for a treat, etc.

Just by cutting down your portions of meat you can save loads - we don't usually eat more than one drumstick or one chicken thigh's worth of meat, and we don't really miss eating more. Buy those value packs and put the extra in the freezer in meal sized portions. Because you have to deskin and debone the chicken yourself, generally, the time you spend doing that is basically money you save.

Over the past month or so, we've saved about £200 of our food money and turned it into holiday savings - once we've been on holiday we can put the food money towards our wedding.

You can also save loads with value brand stuff - value toilet cleaner etc. Tesco value toilet rolls are good value and they are really cheap and not at all noticably worse quality. But, I did get totally screwed by cheap shower gel and shampoo - it's made my hair like straw and my face dry and flakey! Urgh!

I guess the idea is to save save save whilst not making yourself feel like you are depriving yourself of treats. Although my low budget shopping is all right for me, I know some people might find it really depressing and restrictive, so it's not for everyone. I love a bargain though!:rotfl:

    thanks everyone

we are already pretty good with what we spend on food ..... we buy a lot of tesco value stuff :) also things like cheese...everytime we need it I look for whatever one is the best price so we dont stick with the same make all the time costing us loads extra

im thinking about giving myself £60 in cash each week for shopping, and then putting any change in the jar...that way I wont even notice, and it might encourage me to try and spend as little of it as possible if I am handing over actual cash instead of paying on my card

have considered saving on fuel by cycling to work (will help with fitness too :) ) but im such a wuss and the 2 routes to where I work would both terrify me on my bike....so im not too sure whether I will do that or not

I am also thinking of doing some non vw wedding stationery to sell on ebay etc, then anything from that can go towards the wedding fund (do you think about £1 an invite will be ok...thats what I sell the vw stuff for if they order over 100 invites, but thinking just a simple non vw design i could do for £1 for any qty?)

I have started searching round for things to sell...I have found a few bits already just hope I can actually sell it lol

Oh, I dug out an old gold chain that I've not worn in almost 10 years. Popped down to Ramsdens with it and got £30 so that's gone into my wedding fund

  • We didnt have any extra cash to save for the wedding and gave ourselves just over two years to do it as we went along. Its just over 4 months to go and I still have about 35% of the budget to find but I should do it.I have used a combination of selling on ebay, ibootsale, car boots, first proper antique auction lots going into a local auction house tomorrow, quidco(quidco is fantastic!).Also try to save cash you would normally spend and put it toward sthe wedding,e.g.if you buy cheaper shoes than usual deposit the difference in the wedding account.
Thats a big tip, make sure you have a wedding account as its way too easy to just use the wedding money for groceries etc if its lying in your normal account.

She loves to buy stuff - I like the idea of saving the extra that you would have spent on something anyway...seems like an easy way of adding a few quid to the pot :)
I went out last night and took my usual £5 to get a drink with (just local skittles that the future mother in law has conned me into lol) I only spent £2 so the other £3 has gone in the pot :D

  • I'd second the 'spare change' pots that people are mentioning. Out of my wedding fund (miniscule though it is lol) £47 has come from spare change that I would have just spent on other things without noticing. I'm just 20p short of another tenner to put in too!

For our wedding i have started a wedding savings account that i cant open for 1 year. I opened it in january.

Every week (i get paid weekly) £10 gets deducted from my pay. We plan to use this for the stuff we need to pay off and any spare little bits we want.

I've been looking around for things, found very nice black & white napkins from asda for our wedding with matching plates (we're having a buffet) and they are 3 for 2 atm.

So we're going to get non perishables week by week.

I have a big money box that i intend to fill to the top and me and OH empty our change that is under 50p in there.

we have set up an account for wedding funds to go into, I think keeping it seperate is a great idea, and means its easy to see how much we have in there :)
