Money making/saving tips to put towards the wedding?

Hello everyone

Just wondered if any of you have any tips/advice for things we can do to help save for our wedding

We plan to do it for a very small amount of money...but we still need to find the money for it from somewhere lol

What have the rest of you done to save the money?

Im thinking of doing a car boot with all the bits and pieces we have lying around that we dont really want anymore
Also try and sell some more cards/jewellery to raise a few pennies

what else have you all done?

all tips very welcome :)

Sell selected items on e-bay, you may get more for them than a car boot, get other people to give you their stuff for a car boot! Most people are glad for an excuse for a clear out! Save your spare change in a jar/money box or one of those pots you have to break open. My OH is obsesive about saving our change & it annoys the hell out of me when I've no change for the car park!!! But we've only been doing it 3 or 4 months & there's over £200 in there, it's suprising how little you miss the spare change.Oh yes & become addicted to this forum - it's saved us lots & where we are spending the money, helped us find value for money.

Well I brought things from ebay and often in jobs lots then sold on the bits i didnt need and often made more than the original price I brought it for but this isnt guaranteed.

We got most of our favours free by writing to lots of companies and asking - dont ask dont get.

invites were samples got lots of free sample invites some had sample stamped on them so no use but many didnt ordered in both mine and husbands names then made inserts ourselves on computer and brought envelopes - no-one compares invites and were much nicer than anything we could have afforded in shops.

eve inivites did come from whsmith sale though.

wedding dress came from an independant shop she knew my budget was £500 and dress i loved was £950 it had been tried on twice and she was going to order new stock in anyway so said if i took it away that week could have for £450 then she rang and said if i def came back for it by the friday was mine for £350 and she would give me dressmakers name for alterations so cheaper to do direct which I did and alterations were £40.

sorry another thing we did was buy a chest freezer so can shop in bulk and cook in bulk we always had some meals made in freezer such as bolgnese, casserole, curry, shepherds pie so we didnt get tempted to order takeaways this saved us loads

    thanks girlies :)

i was considering putting some bits on ebay actually, thought I might try selling some of my handmade jewellery on there as i have quite a lot of it sitting around, and I have all the stuff to make more, so if it goes well I can keep it up to add to the pot :)

good idea about seeing if anyone else has stuff they want car booted, might be a good way for me to help them have a clear out and make me a few extra pennies lol

the change thing sounds good to...and actually my mum and dad got us this cool money box as an engagment prezzie, that is the mr and mrs wedding fund :) so we can start filling that with change :)

i sometimes have to drive places for work that I get paid mileage for...this normally goes towards clothes or something so I will pop this in the pot too

i plan on making my own invites and other stationery so that will be a big saving :)

oohhh the fill the freezer up idea is inspired :) we are actually planning to do that this weekend, going to the local meat man to fill it up then we will be set up for a while
I will make meals to go in there too...as you say it removes the temptation of a take away (which will help with weight loss too lol)

    keep em coming ladies :)

yeah agree with the weight loss thing reallt helped me lose a stone before wedding without trying, its so easy to take a meal out in morning or even when get home from work can we defrosted in microwave or in pot in a bowl hot water. 3yrs on we still follow this and rarely have takeway.

when we wanted takeway we had 2 jumbo battered sausages with large chips costing about £4 for the 2 of us so was still a treat but cheap rather than a curry or chiense at £12 for 2 of us.

money box is great we had one as an engagement gift too and saved £2 coins in it as thse mount up quickly.

    good luck

Quidco is a good one...I've bought lots of stuff for my wedding on ebay and have got cashback on every purchase with quidco. Have also been selling stuff lying around our flat on ebay and using that money that sits in my paypal account specifically for wedding stuff.

Vista print is great. I heard about it on this site - if you sign up by email for the newsletter they'll always send you emails for free stuff - you just pay postage. I did my save the date magnets this way (just bought plain cards and envelopes from ebay and put them inside).

Buying stuff as you go along with the planning is really good...but beware if you're someone who likes to look around and might change their mind as you'll end up spending more as you re-buy stuff. I managed to get my vases and mirror tiles cheap on ebay for my centrepieces...if not IKEA is a great place for that stuff...or I'm guessing lots will appear on ebay over the next 6 months as summer weddings are over...

Here's another positive vote for the moneybox...we haven't counted it yet, but will be soon :-) and it's going to be honeymoon spending money. We've got 2 moneyboxes - one big jar for general change and another that we just put £1 coins into

Good luck, enjoy the planning - I am :-)

I got myself one of those tins from the £1 shop. You need a can opener to get into it, and there is no way even with a knife in the slot could you get any of the coins back out that went in :D

Sadly, we had a terrible time with VistaPrint for my nieces Birthday Ball this year. Another family member found VistaPrint and pushed her to order through them - I was horrified as I had a previous experience with my book launch postcards two years ago that did not inspire confidence; I expected the worst and was NOT disappointed.

The 350 invitations (paid ones) turned up smaller than we paid for, the wrong colour (Orange and Red!!!), the paperweight was only 90gsm - slightly thicker than your normal computer paper and the printing actually looked like it had been done on a home printer. Not to mention that 1/4 of the invitations were unusable as they were not packed in anything than a cardboard box - loose so they moved around in transit, as a result they bent and tore.

We could have done better with our home printer and a stationery kit from Tesco in the end! They also quoted £12 delivery and then charged £35 without consultation!
There is no way of getting your money back (their T&C's) and they don't answer emails about their shoddy services.

Be very careful when using them - their free services are fine, just don't pay for anything with them, the result in our experience has been poor.

I've heard of a few bad experiences with Vista Print. I used Vista Print for my Save The Date magnets (not a freebie). I didn't have any probs and they arrived quickly, and looked exactly as we expected.. We think they're good value at under £20 for 50....

I have used Vista print many, many times and thankfully I have never had a bad experience with them.

I always check and double check everything and make sure all the boxes at the checkout process are all unticked!
