Rug Doctor / Carpet cleaner? (merged threads)

I want to clean our carpets this weekend, and have seen the Rug Doctor cleaning machine for hire at a few places. Has anyone used one before, and was it any good? They were also selling their own detergents etc - should I get some, or will my own (left over from hiring a HUGE steam cleaner a few years ago) be OK, as its a low-foam type? The going rate for a 24hour hire seems pretty reasonable at £19.99.

Its £15 at Homebase.
With many stores, try and book it on Easter saturday. As they are closed on the sunday you get 2 days for the price of 10 -
Just used a Rug Doctor on my old property last weekeed that was rented out and was left in a state. All I can say is that it was excellent, but it can take some work. I used the detergent that they supplied (I think it was £15 something to buy) and it proved to be very effective.
Basically, the machine has a brush head underneath that agitates the carpet. Hence, it sprays the water/cleaner mixture ino the carpet, agitates it all up with the brush to loosen the deep down dirt, and then sucks it all back out again into the tank. When you operate the machine, you just drag it backwards along the carpet - no need to scrub etc because the weight of the machine holds it down to do the cleaning. Past machines I've used have been like a simple cylinder hoover where you needed to keep pushing and pulling the cleaner head back and forth to agitate the carpet - totally useless.
What I found was that I had to do the carpets a number of times before they were clean (basically because they were so dirty). When I first did them, the waste water was still coming up very dirty. It was only after the 4th or 5th time that the water started coming up clean.
Hope this helps.0 -
Have hired the rug doctor 3 times now and find it so much better than previous models I have tried and my own Vax of years past. Brilliant for carpets, bit fiddly for upholstry I found. Don't know if they would be happy for you not to purchase the detergent. I've always used their stuff. Highly recommended.0

Thanks for letting me know your opinions: I hired the machine today (£17.99 at Sainsburys instore drycleaners - homebase ones were booked out) and it's done a great job! Much better than the old steam cleaner ones, and way, way better than a vax. I used their detergent but diluted it a bit more, cos I wanted to avoid any residue - and I'm very impressed! Will definitely rent one again.0

Hi
Need to hire something to clean our carpets after having lots of building work done. How wet or how dry are your carpets using the Rug Doctor? Do they take long to dry out if wet?

We used the Rug Doctor to clean the carpets first (using the water/vacuum combination) then went over the area again just using the vacuum function to get as much water out as possible. We had the central heating on and the carpets were dry in about 2 - 3 hours.0
