I started smoking when I was 12, gave up when I was almost 30.

I used patches for a few weeks to get rid of the nicotine craving while I dealt with the other stuff (hand automatically lifting up when sitting at the pc etc.)

The ONLY reason I was successful was because I REALLY wanted to stop - I enjoyed smoking and could afford it, but my lovely daughter had reached her 1st birthday, and I realised it would then be her 2nd, 3rd, 4th and I'd still be saying I should stop....she never saw us smoke, and we had one room we went to for a smoke, but that wouldn't have worked as she got older, so I knew I had to do it for her sake, I didn't want her being a smoker.Statistics show that children of smokers are far more likely to end up smokers themselves. MY DH stopped a couple of months after me, and we saved up the money and went on the trip of a lifetime and got married with the proceeds.

I didn't notice the health effects before I stopped because I'd smoked from such a young age. Your Mum might be the same, although at 49 she has smoked for many years more than I did, so there might be some shortness of breath and poor circulation things creeping in(like hands and feet being cold?)

MY father smoked and had his first heart attack at 49, stopped smoking foro a bit, and only managed to finally stop when he had a second heart attack.

Your MUM should be the one phoning up the hypnotherapy clinic - but sit her down and show her this thread, tell her you really love her and want her to be a granny to your future children and not die prematurely. See if that helps her. There's a switch in her head that needs flicked to stop her wanting to smoke again - she needs something strong enough to flick it - whether it's hypnotherapy or her love for you, it needs to be pretty big.;)

Good Luck - and btw, tell her you don't ever realise how bad smoking smells until yuo've been stopped a few months - the house reeks, clothes smell terrible and I was completely oblivious how awful it was, because I came from a house where my parents smoked and I started before they stopped.:o

I've been stopped for 9 and a half years now, we've had some great holidays, paying off large chunks of the mortgage too (see my signature), and we're taking our 10yo DD to Disney in Florida this Christmas - something we could never have done while we both smoked.

She has to really want to give up, its no good trying anything if you dont really want to give up

I tried Zyban years ago and it worked for a while but I started smoknig again after 2 months.

I am on the patches now, and have been smoke free for 8 days, I have gone from 20 a day to nothing, I dont even crave them anymore, I have the inhalator as well as the patches and I havent had to use it once.

I think I am being more successful this time cos I REALLY want to quit, and I am trying for a baby, so that is spurring me on as well, I dont want to get pregnant and be smoking. I want the baby to have a healthy start in life, and IMO I shouldnt be smoknig while pregnant, so that is I think the reason I am so focused this time.

I tried it years ago and I stopped for about a fortnight. I should have gone back for another session really. I believe it can work - after all apart from the nicotine addiction the act of smoking, wanting to smoke etc. is all in our minds, simple as that.

I stopped 3 months ago after going to an Allen Carr clinic. It cost me £170 but that's not much more than I would have spent on cigs in a month anyway. If it doesn't work for you, then you have to go to a top up clinic which lasts a couple of hours, if it still doesn't work you have to go to another one and if it still hasnt' worked then you can get your money back.

I used a hypnotist to stop when I found out I was pregnant, it worked like a dream until the baby was born when I went back to it. I think it didn't cure the underlying addiction.
I'm another Champix convert, I can't praise the ease of stopping on Champix enough, but unfortunately I did suffer side effects, I took a low dose for 5 weeks and I have been stopped 13 weeks now.
I would advocate having a read of the Allen Carr book though, I think it undoes the "brainwashing" a smoker has.
I've just started to read his book "The Only Way To Stop Smoking Permanently" to back up what Champix has started and so far he makes a lot of sense. People read his books, smoke their last cig and that's it, they are a non-smoker from there on, that can't be bad.
Well I can't stand by the side
And watch this life pass me by

Champix every time. OH smoked 20 a day for over 20 years and he stopped like that and has never smoked since. He has told friends who have also stopped.

Only side effect for him was feeling nauseous first thing when he would take morning pill before brekky but a small price to pay for giving up.

I smoked 20 a day for 20 years. I couldnt imagine my life with cigarettes and couldnt imagine a night out or having a good time or meal with wine without them. I saw an advert for hypnotherapy in a free paper on my way to work one day. I went. I paid £250. It worked.
I walked out of there and never thought of smoking or cigarettes ever again! Being free of that addiction has been amazing. Tell her to do it - maybe see what other people there are around. If you want to go to the lady who treated me, just PM me.
It'll be the best gift she ever gave herself, or her family for that matter.
