Council Tax & cashback?

Check your Council Tax bills.
Received my new Council Tax bill yesterday and noticed that payment can be made using a credit card at council offices/libraries/by phone. I plan to use a credit card in future for all Council Tax payments and accrue cashback/reward points. I pay off the full balance every month, so it will be a little extra money for nothing.
Hope others will be able to do the same, if you are not already doing so.

I've advocated this before but got a letter from my council asking if I want to continue with the continuous payment authority on my card as they are now introducing a 1.95% surcharge for CC use.

Needless to say the direct debit form is in the post...

Glasgow City Council have online Council tax payments on their website and I have paid with my credit card for several years. £2500 gets you a few points on your card.

Thanks Galstonian, gutted when I read your reply. However,
rang local Council and to my delight they do not make surcharge. It must differ from area to area.

I got a Mastercard cash back card precisely for this reason. An excellent use of a cashback card (if you can).

I got my bill today and it doesn't say you can pay by credit card (Forest Heath District Council) Perhaps I should phone them and inquire all the same.
  • it's a brilliant idea. I have just looked at my council tax bill and it says that you can pay by Switch/Delta and credit card. You don't even have to call into the council offices, mine even provide a 0845 automated payment number. Could be worse and they made it 0870 but Lo-call I think is reasonable on its charges.
Re the surcharge, I know in Ripoff Britain many companies are adding a percentage to purchases made by credit cards and is now legal. But local councils - can they do that? By the way did it say in the accompanying paperwork that you would be surcharged for using a cc or did they tell you after you inquired?
I am now off to find a credit card provider who gives cashback on purchases!

Anyone know which is the best credit card for giving cashback? Also how quickly do you have to pay your bill without incurring extra charges. (Im not a credit card user)

Using Martin's advice around making money from credit cards our Council Tax has been charged to a Halifax card with 0% for 9 months, while the money is earning 4.5%. The 9 months are up soon and we are transferring it to Mint for 8 months, with room to add this years Council tax to!

    Even better then cash back.
