For what it's worth, running with EGR disabled will not hurt your engine in any way, shape or form. It's relatively common to remove them completely as they often cause issue.
Not true.
Do a google search. It can have long term effects on diesels especially with some makes and turbos. No doubt the OP would have demanded compensation from the RAC when these happened though,0 -
Ah derv, I must have skipped over that bit, I don't know much about them other than the smell and rattle :rotfl: I was talking about petrol cars, although it's fine to remove it on turbo petrol cars.0

For those of you who are interested, I eventually got £450 of the £600 refunded after various independent mechanics supported my view.
In summary the mechanics I asked said that as long as the EGR valve was closed the car could indeed be driven the necessary miles without any harm coming to the vehicle. This was supported by a Vauxhall mechanic who was a friend of my guy who also produced a piece of promotional blurb saying this was a common fault with Vauxhalls and there is now a specific tool on the market to help with the procedure.
I argued my case right up to director level when I finally found someone willing to concede some ground, and they settled with me.
Lucky or not my car has now been fixed and I have driven for a number of months with no problems at all.0
