Sony Vaio laptop problems

Just for a change it's my DD's laptop causing problems!
I can't get on to the internet even tho here at my desktop all is fine (she gets on wirelessly through my connection), I therefore can't update any of the protective software or download the MS updates etc.
When I try to run anything, it just hangs.
I've downloaded onto a flashpen new versions of Malware bytes, Superantispyware, Spybot S&D. All of which are already on her laptop but none will work.
So my first question is... what are the two 'buttons' for at the top of her computer? 1 is labelled 'AV' and one is labelled S1 (I think, if I remember correctly). What do they do and are they relevant to the problems?
I am now going downstairs to try and uninstall the progs I've got 'fresh' downloads of and will try to see if I can make progress.!
Can't seem to get the message across about updating and running all this protection I put on there for her!!

Would this be on the chassis on the display itself? More to the point, what model is it?flossy_splodge wrote: »what are the two 'buttons' for at the top of her computer? 1 is labelled 'AV' and one is labelled S1 (I think, if I remember correctly).0 -

The only other thing I can see is VGN - NRIDE??
As to where these buttons are - they're on the base part ie NOT the lid that holds the screen; but they are near to the hinges well 'above' the actual keyboard.
Does that make sense?:o0 -
you may need to rename the install files for those programs to get them to run if the laptop is infected , and then again the actual program file ...ie Mbam.exe to anewmbam.exeEx forum ambassador

There should be a PDF manual installed on the laptop that will tell you what those buttons are for. But I don't think either of them will remove viruses or spyware! No free lunch, and no free laptop

Er, no, I didn't think that, it's just that I'm trying to cover all the bases as my DD is at work and I can't ask her what last happened and I just wondered what they were for! There should be a PDF manual installed on the laptop that will tell you what those buttons are for. But I don't think either of them will remove viruses or spyware!
Any thoughts where i would find such file or what to search for ie do I just do a search for all pdf files?
Thanks.0 -
It's normally delivered with a shortcut set up on the desktop. Or just go to the Sony website and download the manual for that model. No free lunch, and no free laptop

S1 By default, pressing this button launches the Dolby control centre.
AV Launches the VAIO Launcher for launching the desired AV Software
Look on your computer for the "VAIO User Guide" and on page 33 of trhe guide you will find more info on these buttons0 -
Hmm... the VGN-NS20E, perhaps?flossy_splodge wrote: »The only other thing I can see is VGN - NRIDE??0
