New boiler for efficiency

Our gas bill is horrendous and we are thinking about replacing our really old boiler for a more modern one in the hope it is gooing to be more efficient. Does anyone have any tips about which kind of system we would need? We have 2 showers in the morning each day (currently a power shower) and 2 or 3 times a week the kids have a bath. Apart from that I think all the white goods have cold water intake. Do we need a tank because of the power shower? Has anyone else been through this?

What system have you got at the moment-combi or conventional boiler? If you've only got a combi, then it'll be a lot of work putting a tank in, assuming you have the space.
Depends totally on your preferences, do you need stored hot water, if so you need a conventional boiler. Combis can be a bit slow to fill a bath, though the new ones are better. Showers can vary, depending on distance from the boiler etc.
PS: if you are heating your washing machine water by electricity (cold fill only?), that is wasting money, as it's much cheaper to use the hot water produced by your gas boiler. It also elongates your washing cycle.
But any new condensing boiler, combi or conventional, will be much more efficient than your existing old boiler. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

Good morning: Before you cough up ££££s for new install have you taken other measures to reduce your gas costs eg. loft/cavity wall insulation, heating controls eg. room thermostat, TRVS, have boiler serviced, pipework lagged (insulated), upgrade to a more efficient HW cylinder and so on. If you have done all that you can, then get in a RGI recommended to you by a source you trust to conduct a site survey and then quote. Info on the specification and installation of gas central heating is available here

I would also look how long you have your boiler actually working. I managed to make quite a large saving by reducing our boiler timer to only come on one hour before we got up and one hour before we came home from work as it was on for hours before. Now we have electric showers, we don't put it on timer at all and just switch it on for one hour when we need it on.
Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!
