With all this publicity about banks refunding charges, I wonder how long it will be until everyone gets charged for everything again??

At the moment if you keep your account in credit there are no fees.
If you go overdrawn and ask first the fees are not too bad.
If you go over your limit you should be charged loads.

Banks are a business, and all the people overdrawn are keeping the majority of us in "free" banking. Why should that stop for a few overspenders??

    Rant over for the day...

Banks, like any other business, yes should be making money, however it's hardly reasonable nor responsible morally, to continually charge families that are struggling with debts £25 a time for going £2 over limit.

We all make mistakes and I try not to judge other people for theirs. People are only in debt because it's people like banks who throw credit at those people who they know will probably never be able to pay back entire sums and so money grub to line the pockets of their fat cats but charging ridiculous rates of interest and whacking great charges!

How can we expect people to dig themselves out of holes if the whole time banks and the like keeping giving them a smaller spade?

Next time you want your car cleaning give me a shout. We all know a fiver is a reasonable amount to give someone for cleaning your car. However, I will charge you £50 and won't explain why. That is basically the equivalent of what the banks are doing.

I'd happily pay for my current account if it made these fees go down to a reasonable amount.

I am a member of the bank forum thingy and have just sent my 2nd letter after getting the standard response "we think £25 charge for going £1 over yr overdraft is reasonable" pmsl.

I have no problem taking them to court for the £1000 they've had in the last year. Good luck to everyone who is trying

Like 12 days and counting to get news on my STOLEN money - £2,011 (+ interest now)

I resent paying for other people's banking. If free banking was eventually scrapped because of all of this, and I had to pay for the services I used, the banks would soon be in competition for bigger market share by making themselves as cheap as possible - maybe even free for some things. Free banking eh? Who ever would have thought :D:D

boo-hoo the banks might lose some of their billion pound profits in having to pay us back the extra money they have charged us

I have no problem in Mr bank saying "sorry mr adams we had to return a direct debit payment and it costed us £2.50 so we are having to pass this £2.50 cost to you"

The banks will always make money eg by putting the mortgage rates up by the full amount when the Bank of England puts up base rates but they never seem to cut the mortgage rates by the full amount when the base rate falls

I have free banking when in credit, and pay a silly rate when overdrawn, something like 17% APR.

Why should I have to pay 25p per transaction to subsidise people who don't phone and organise an overdraft before writing a cheque or buying a shiny new toy???

If you don't have the money then wait until you do. Didn't :money: and his team say borrowing and saving are 2 sides of the same coin?

  • I don't honestly think that the banks are going to blink too much at losing the chance to charge late fees - I think their profits largely come from what they do with our money when they have it to "look after". I have no qualms in asking for my charges back (though I haven't yet done this) - I'm interested that Barclays have given back someone's charges, as they're my bank too.

If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.

Nomoneytoday, What ARE you on about?

How does this one go, because my employer made an almight balls up last month and put me down as SSP when I was on jury service, I got paid 750 less in my paycheck. On payday, I phoned payroll to find out what had gone on, then phoned my bank to advise what had happened, they helpfully advised me that 4 of my debits had bounced, as they all go out on payday, or next working day, costing me a princely total of 140. Two of these debits were £2 a month to charities, the other debits were less than 20 quid. My fault? No, but then i had to get to work, so i write a cheque for a travelcard in the hope Ive been paid for it by the time the cheque clears, No i havent etc. Into a spiral of last month alone costing me somewhere in the region of 300 in charges. Work didnt pay me the 750 quid until the following payday.

Many many of us here are getting bank charges when we are trying our best, but Im losing 300 quid this month, meaning I dont have enough to live on. What happens then, I have to bounce the account to live the frugal existence i do.

If you dont agree with people claiming bank charges back, fine thats your prerogative. But I do object to you saying that, it is offensive, especially when there are SO many of us struggling for all kinds of different reasons (raising children singlehandedly, illness, disability, redundancy) , and bank charges starting the spiral in the first place. Bounce one DD for £2, you are 35 quid short next month, and so it goes on. Theres not many of us getting "shiny new toys" round here, if you havent noticed, apart from the fat cats in the banks of course.....

EDIT TO say, did oi get the wrong end of the stick there?
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast
