how much approx for solicitors?

its been a while since i last moved house

are there any ideas of how much solicitors charge these days to do both sale and purchase?
or do they differ depending on where u live?
(i am in north east)

i have budgeted for around £1000 plus searches on top???

    definitely worth shopping around. I'm based in Surrey and the solicitors here are very expensive so I use one in Liverpool - much more reasonable :D I think for sale and purchase, he's charging around £1300 (incl searches).

    All the solicitors I got quotes from operated a sliding scale depending on the sale price of the house, so it varies massively. There's no substitute for ringing round - estate agents will recommend a few names to you in your area.

    Mind you, we had a good estate agent and trusted their recommendation (who has turned out to be fine), others I might not put my trust in.

    You dont have to use a local solicitor but it does help when things get sticky if they already know the other professionals in the chain.

    My general advice would be not to go with the sols 'attached' to the estate agents. Beresfords for example now only recomend their own in-house solicitors and they are abysmal.
