Income Protection Insurance - Redundancy and Job Seekers Allowance

I was made redundant last November and luckily had income protection insurance to cover my loan and credit card repayment as well as having some cash left over for essentials. - I have no other insurance on these. I have claimed JSA since November - 6 months on contribution based and now after this. I have just received a letter from the DWP asking for information on what I have been having signed - They want to know how much I get , when i am paid, what I am paying for it, copies of loan agreements, credit card statements, etc. I am still paying monthly premiums for these. Will this affect my JSA , will I have to pay any back - I am only just getting by now -Can someone help.
Thanks

  • Hi

I cant see how it would affect your JSA, but I am no benefits expert.
I too was made redundant in March this year and am finally hoping to see some mortgage protection insurance shortly at long last, because my husband works I wont get anything once my Cont based JSA runs out.

It seems unfair that should you choose to protect yourself you arent entitled to the same help as someone who didnt bother.

Are you now going onto Income Based Jobseekers ?

I would imagine your income protection insurance only covers you for 12 months so this might be worth pointing out to the jobcentre. I am not really sure how it works though I am sure an expert will be along shortly

I think it possible that these payments may count as income for means testing but you'd be better posting on the Benefits Board for a more informed opinion.
