Can I add a PIR sensor to a normal outside light?

We have seen a lovely nickel and glass porch light we would like to buy, but really need one with a sensor as we have a very dark house and driveway...
Is it possible to buy said light, and then add a sensor when connecting it?
Don't worry, we will be getting an electrician..!
Thanks,
Actiongirl

Yes, it's almost as easy as just adding the light in the first place.
What you want is a stand alone PIR (they vary a lot in style if you look round), what you do is basically wire the PIR in, then connected the light to the PIR's "switched" output rather than directly to the power source.
The PIR's are normally fairly well labled in regards to the wiring etc, and as long as you follow the instructions you should be fine - the one thing I would say (and I would say this when running any electrics outside) is make sure they are connected to the mains via an RCD plug with suitable fusing, and always make sure any seals on the light/pir are in good nick when you do them up.
Also always have the wire enter from below, and make sure the lowest point in the wire/run is below the light/pir (so water can't run along it into the light/pir)0 -
A 5amp fused spur from the ring main would be preferable.
It's also important to position PIRs correctly to avoid false triggering, else you'll be replacing light bulbs every month or so.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Thanks both.
We have a great electrician who has just replaced all our RCDs and given us a new fuse board, so he will be spot on when connecting the PIR.
I appreciate your replies.0
