    Just a Couple Questions?

How new and what was the MB?
    What Watt was the PSU?
    What was the CPU?

It might be saving money, but it will costing you in the long run. It will outdate itself within 6 months and become your 5 year old pc within 12 months. Why not spend (not over the top) but a good amount and get something that will last you another 5 years rather than upgrading it every year.

I take it you will be storing the "Family Videos" on the computer? in which case you'll need a good amount of storage.

    AMD 64 bit - Sempron LE 1250
160 Gig Ultra Fast Serial ATA HD - 7200 RPM
    1 Gig Fast DDR2 RAM - 667 Mhz memory
    ASROCK N61P-S Motherboard
20x speed multi format Samsung DVD rewriter
    Integrated 16 bit 5.1 sound
up to 256 MB integrated graphics

They used my old PSU 400w. I dont have a video camera. Dont see the need to upgrade as long as it keeps working!
  • If you are looking for a new system then check out the guys at Tronix Computers are very good and i bought a system which is really good value for money - unfortunately i am unable to post a direct link but the system is called "Tronix Advantage+ PC System" and it cost me just over £500 and included a 22" Monitor

They can be found at the local computer fairs in and around London ie UCL tottenham court Road on Saturdays so if your local check them out.

I would 100% be tempted to get a Mac Mini. I have a Mac Mini and I can tell you it runs very quietly.

My PC is now in need of replacement as its about 5 years old and I have issues with parts of the motherboard not working.

    So is mine :D
Still running sweet as a nut!

What do you mean by "parts of the motherboard"?

Generally speaking, any sort of motherboard fault will result in POST failure and the system would either not start at all or sit there beeping menacingly.

Not to doubt you at all, but do you have any more information?

At first glance i'd say someone has been feeding you a load of nonsense!

Im wondering if perhaps, it's got some issues and you think its easier just to get a new PC?
You see, I've sold refurbished PCs that are more than 5 years old and bar the latest games they run just as quickly as a new PC. The last one I did was a HP Compaq 2.8ghz P4, which booted into windows in just 25 seconds after a full reinstall.

Dunno about you, but i'd rather save my money for a holiday :D

Well, one of the slots where the RAM goes doesnt work and the mouse port went so I am having to use a USB one.

Bit of an update, I went out last night and bought one! I want to process video that I have stored and 1 meg of RAM was making it crash. I must admit I'm very impressed as its mightily speedy.

Thanks for your help though. I get some really good advice from MSE forums and usually within minutes of posting a question.
