Tadworth / ewell/ epsom

Hi guys, does anyone have any knowledge of the Ewell, Epsom and Tadworth areas...? I am reloacting to Surrey for work but have to stay within M25 (Zone 6) and these are within my price range - any advice on the areas would be most helpful.

many thanks, QP.

What are you looking for in an area? Do you want a busy town (Epsom) or the suburban village feel of Ewell. Tadworth is even more remote for a village within the M25 that is!

Perhaps Ewell may suit best then? Tadworth is a little way out of things. Epsom&Ewell (E&E) interlink and are thought of as one of the best places to live in the country. There is some great green areas such as Epsom Downs however places like Wimbledon, Kingston and central London and all within 30-45 mins by train.

bit pedantic but Epsom is not zone 6, it's the first station outside the zones. Do you refer to the zones because you will be using the train for getting to work? If so then property near the stations will of course be at a premium and Epsom's is a town centre location so expensive station parking only

Worth bearing in mind also which London station you want as Ewell has 2 stations (albeit <1 mile apart) each serving a different destination (Waterloo or Victoria) and is on the "fast" line. Tadworth is 1 from the end of the line, so is a typical Surrey branch line service for poor frequency and earlyish departure of last trains back from London if you stay up late

If you want village feel then forget Epsom, although it leaves much to be desired as a shopping centre, it is by far and away a town feel and has some big estates. Ewell is certainly village feel, my neighbour's sister lives there and describes it as having an active village community

    I don't know Tadworth
Of course you really want to move 2 or 3 stops down the line, Leatherhead for a town or Bookham for a real village, but then I'm biased as I live there! :D

I have a friend who lives in Ewell and I love the place because it has a villagey feel to it unlike Epsom which although smart can be a bit brash. My friend lives in a road called The Wells and it seems very country-fied and I have always felt safe walking around there, its not that far from Epsom either.

Oh and Leatherhead has some nice charity shops.

I grew up there and to be honest the bars and shops are crap in both those places (you'd want to go to Kingston or Wimbledon for shopping), and they're so close together it doesn't really matter which you choose.

Personally i'd choose Ewell. It's one stop nearer London (and hence cheaper rail fares) and there are far less chavs. As a pevious poster said, there are two stations in Ewell. Ewell East to Victoria & London Bridge (peak times only for LB) and Ewell West goes to Waterloo. Marginally quicker going to Waterloo from Ewell West than going from Ewell East to Victoria.

Ewell East is posher and probably more expensive, Ewell West is nearer the two large council estates if something like that bothers you. Not that you'll get too much trouble in Ewell or Epsom. There aren't any shops in Ewell Village (apart from a 7-11 type place, some newagents and a few pubs). The nearest supermarket is Sainsbury's, half way between Ewell & Epsom.

Not sure what else to say without knowing what you really want, other than they're both pretty posh areas (except Epsom town centre which is a dump; they have bouncers outside McDonalds on some occasions and not without crime as my friends found out when someone was murdered on their doorstep in Epsom a few years ago). If it matters Epsom always seems to win awards for "Best area to live in England". No idea why, there's nothing there...

If i was you and you wanted to stay with Zone 6 i'd look at Surbiton or Kingston. Kingston has much much much better shops, it's on the river so's more pleasant, there's more to do and you can get to London in 15 mins on a non stop train from Surbiton. House prices are similar, i'd bet Kingston might even be slightly cheaper than Epsom right now.

Or do what i did years ago and sack it all off to live in London :p

Lol, I feel you are a little harsh on Epsom. As a "town" centre it has all you need and its a little unfair comparing it with Wimbledon or Kingston both of which have some proper estates. Anyway, Epsom has theatre, pubs, resturants, ciema, good choice of shops excellent rail links. I would think Wimbledon and Kingston have the higher crime rates too.

When I asked a question here about an area the first reply I got suggested I consult Google and it was implied that I was wasting time posting my question. :( Fortunately subsequent replies were more helpful.
I'm pleased to see all your replies are useful.

It is worth mentioning that these places are all outside of zone 6 if that is important to you.

I'd agree with most of the comments above. Epsom is a bit of a strange place, often very intimidating for a smallish town in the location that it is in. The difference with places like Kingston and Wimbledon is that they are much bigger, so it is easier to avoid the violence/chavs if you want to by just not going to the wrong parts of town. The council estates are bigger, but do not dominate in the same way Longmead does in Epsom.

I prefer to live somewhere like Kingston or Surbiton - faster, cheaper trains and a nicer feel if you live in a good part. The problem is that the good parts are a good deal more expensive.
