What is the best way of retaining NCB for spouses (assuming single car)? I wont need to this year but next year I will need to preserve my spouse NCB (we moved from dual to single car - both of us have maximum NCB). Would a policy under a "short term" insurance be enough to reset the clock on NCB expiry? I could certainly do without the car for a week if necessary. The added cost of a short term policy would certainly be more beneficial than losing maximum no claime.

If a policy is cancelled early on (paying cancellation fees as appropriate and accepting the refund) would this be enough to reset the NCB clock?

I dont fancy buying a cheap restoration project car just to rot under the compost heap...

You could insure the car one year in your name with spouse as named driver and the following year your spouse could insure in their name with you as named driver. (obviously correctly declaring the main driver)
That way both NCB's are kept live.

I might be wrong but I don't think short term car insurance or cancelling mid policy would work in your situation. To get proof of NCB you need to have a policy for 1 year so cancelling early or only having a policy for a few months wouldn't get you the required NCB proof.

Thanks. I think that will be the best to switch policy holders but at the same time switch declaration of main drivers. Most allow spouses to own the car. I wasnt too bothered about increasing NCB just resetting the clock, however it would be just as cheap to do what you suggest.

For the record I though about buying a VIN plate and logbook (a project car minus the actual metal part of the car) the cost would have been the same insuring a non moving entity as it would have to switch declarations.
