After literally months/years of looking have found a carpet which I like and within budget to do entire downstairs so don't want to make a mistake. The one I've seen is Davenport carpets Simply Natural collections and it's 100% wool berber for £13 a square metre. Yes I know for that price it's not going to last like an axminster but has anyone any knowledge of this company. I've tried googling but no success. thanks

I've never heard of them, but then there are so many carpet companies out there now. It may be an idea to check whether the company is British & if the wool used is 100% British.
There are a lot of carpets made in Europe nowadays, especially Belgium. I'm not saying the carpets from Europe are a lesser quality, but I've always felt more comfortable with British wool.
As the carpet is going to be downstairs, with heavy use, ensure it's a heavy domestic quality so it will withstand a reasonable amount of wear & tear. The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -
thanks for that - yes it did say heavy domestic quality. I take your point about 100% wool carpets made in Belgium as we had one previously that went threadbare - mind you that was after about 10 years. As a matter of interest there was also some 50/50 berber type and some 90/10 wool synthetic. Would these necessarily be better wearing than all wool, do you think?0

Yes mel, a 90/10 mix would be better wearing than 100% wool. I always go for twist pile carpet & choose an 80/20 mix as this is very hardwearing & the recommended mix for twist pile, meaning the carpet keeps it's good looks for years to come.
I wouldn't go for a 50/50 as if there is too much synthetic material in a carpet it tends to look shabier quicker & synthetic material seems to act as a dirt magnet. The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -
Hi,
Ive been in the flooring trade with various retailers, manufacturers and distributors and have never heard of Davenport Carpets, although I do know that some carpet retailers will change the names of their products. This makes it nigh on impossible for the customer to shop around for the same goods.
What shop did you see the sample? Answer this and I may be able to track it down for you!Profit=sanity
