Thanks. I live in Ipswich in Suffolk. Now considering (a) changing suppliers to see if anyone will give me a better price on the upgrade, (b) replacing our old gas cooker with an electric one to bring the draw on gas down (not significantly more expensive than upgrading the meter and certainly cheaper than having to upgrade the pipe to the meter as well should that turn out not to be big enough).
Changing to an electric cooker to reduce your gas consumption may avoid you having to go to the expense of a gas meter upgrade, however in the longer term you should remember that the cost of electricity per kWh is much higher than per kWh of gas.
Many years ago when we had gas central heating installed we were informed by the installer that the gas meter may have to be upgraded. We contacted the gas company and a manager came out to inspect and said that he did not think that we did and that we should only be concerned if the gas meter became noisy, which it didn't.
National Grid is the transporter for your area. General Enquiries number is 0845 605 6677 or www.nationalgrid.com I'd change the cooker to be honest, it'll be much quicker and probably a lot cheaper than having the meter changed and bigger service installed.
