things to do at the weekends

Hi all,

Hubby and I are DINKS - and all of our family lives abroad.

So sometimes we find ourselfs at loose ends at the weekends.

We used to end up at the shopping centre for something to do but it isn't very money saving and we have FAR too much stuff as it is!!!

Anyone got some ideas of things we can do, we quite often end up driving around looking of for fates or things going on but rarely find anything, yesterday we drove about for ages, we had fun as it wass a nice day and got ice creams but ended up just going home again. As it turns out there was a large event on in the town but we had driven in the other direction - TYPICAL!!!!!

So any and all ideas welcome I have my eye on a picnic next weekend if the weathers nice.

What does everyone else do?

thanks x

Get yourself the local papers and read them! All local events will be in there and there will be loads every weekend.

Lots of villages are having their annual fetes around now.

Also - think about getting national trust membership. You can get a great deal, plus cashback plus a free gift if you follow through on the thread on this site - have a search.

Also - the BBC site for your county will have a "what's on" guide for listings in your area - have a browse.

I agree with gettin the local papers to find out about boot sales/fetes locally.
Also whats the geography like where you live? we live by the coast and can go to the mariner, port/docks on a sunday to look at the boats.
we also bought bikes recently and go on big cycle rides round the local area (taking a picnic in a rucksack). we also go to the gym a lot and do lots of different classes (yoga, pilates and spinning).

    We use www.wherecanwego.com for ideas.

Open gardens? Get the Yellow National Garden Scheme book. The usually have cake and teas.

    Have you considered volunteering together?

Have a look for carboots, cheaper than the shopping centres :D
You could even do a carboot yourself. They're actually fun to do(despite the early morning) plus the extra money would come in handy for a weekend treat:D

    I've been Money Tipped!
Looking in to hobbies you can share and do individually if you want too, is a very good idea. This can be cheap or expensive. DH and I have horses (an other animals) which keep us busy, but we also garden, which can be very cheap. Allotments, though hard to get, can reduce your bills, get you active and its quite exciting to go through watching thing sgerminate, grow on, flower, then fruit.

Depending where you live you might also have a community crying out for volunteers for events that you enjoy. Fetes can be tricky to organise, and though, IME, its hard to be the new people involved, its a case of many hands making light work.

The innamon trust are always looking for volunteers to walk dogs for local older people unable to walk their dogsnand walking is MUCH more fun with a dog or two :)

Me and the missus, did an argentine tango workshop the other Sunday, its was great fun, cost £6 each for 3 hour class, then dancing for another 3 hours.
So much fun we have decided to attend weekly classes.

No idea what a DINK is, but it sounds painful.

We tend to the allotment and garden, go to gigs, and both days this weekend went to Open Gardens, taking a couple of pubs in on the way. Yesterday's Open Gardens was on a Private High End Estate in Nottingham that you usually can't even enter without the pass...I found out about it as I go there for a massage once a fortnight and my therapist mentioned it. £5 and 17 gardens opened....plus tea, cakes, champers, and plant sales along the way.

We also go to various local shows, and take the SD to various places although at 12 she is growing out of some of the places we used to pretend were for kids....lol

There are festivals all round the City over the next few months, so we will check those out, and we go to the arthouse cinemas etc..

Not enough days in each weekend if you ask me.....
