BT Line Rental

Hey everyone, we've moving into a new house on the 3rd July so I'm currently trying to get things set with utility companies.
I know that the house we're buying has a BT phone connection, but no Sky or Cable TV/Broadband etc so I'm going to be taking a package out with Sky with TV, Broadband and phone. I was going to cancel the BT Line Rental and take it out through Sky to have it all in the one place, can I do this? Should I cancel it with BT before arranging Sky or vice versa?
Any help would be appreciated.

Have a read through threads on here, if you have already commited to BT then you may well be in a contract, which will cost you to cancel and change supplier
If you have not taken the BT package yet then your options ares till open, but I do not know how Sky operate, no doubt someone who does will be along soon
PS Have a read of this recent thread to find a common pitfall

Well I dont know what contract the previous was on for BT so I havent commited to BT in anyway.
I spoke to Sky earlier and they said they'd switch over the line rental for me. I explained my position about moving into the house with a line there and they just said they'd switch over for me.I wouldnt have to do anything.0 -
I think you need to be careful about who you ask for what, if you contact BT and ask then to install or takover an existing line in the property then you will be starting a contract with BT with a minimum term of 12 months ( 18 months if they offer you 'free' installation on a brand new line)
If you get the line (via BT ) and switch to Sky inside the minimum term you will be charged a penalty by BT, if you want to use Sky then get Sky to arrange the installation of the line, they can and do offer this, if Sky imply its OK to get BT to install and then contact then to take the line over then you dont be suprised when the 'final' BT bill is larger than what you were expecting0 -
Well I rang the estate agents this morning to confirm the seller will be disconnecting his BT line and he will be as its one of his bills.
So thats fine.
And I've only spoke to Sky so far about line rental and they said they'd activate it for us so it all seems ok  *fingers crossed though*0 -
Remember you will be contracted to Sky for 12 months.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0
